Weather updates for Fairfield County Connecticut

Heat may spark afternoon thunderstorms

|

Monday

It’s going to remain very hot today, but we’ll see a slight drop in humidity.

The National Weather Service also says there is a chance that the warm temperatures could lead to the development of strong thunderstorms that could bring heavy downpours.

The NWS has also issued a flash flood watch for Litchfield County:  “The combination of nearly saturated ground and slow moving thunderstorms containing locally heavy rain could lead to localized flash flooding. Heavy rainfall could lead to significant ponding on roadways and areas of poor drainage. In addition there could be rapid rises on creeks and even larger rivers.”

You can track the thunderstorms by checking out the radar here.

Here’s the forecast:

Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. West wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Watch for cumulonimbus clouds to develop this afternoon as warm air rises from the ground. These clouds, also known as "thunderheads," can produce lighting, heavy rains and strong winds.
