Marine Corps Colors to be presented in PD ceremony

A Westport police officer who served in Afghanistan last year as a Marine Corps reservist, will present the U.S. Marine Corps Colors to Police Chief Dale Call during a ceremony Wednesday at Police Department headquarters.

The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. in the department classroom at 50 Jesup Road.

Officer Michael Ruttenber served as a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve’s 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, Bravo Co., during a deployment to Afghanistan from May to December of 2011.

The unit conducted reconnaissance and security patrols throughout the Sangin Valley of Afghanistan during the deployment.

During Ruttenber’s deployment, Westport police officers collected canned goods, snacks and personal hygiene items and mailed them to the Marine company.

Leading the collection program was Public Safety Officer Chris Proudfoot, also a former Marine.

Donations for framing the Marine Corps Colors were provided by the Policemen’s Benevolent Association, Westport Police Union, Local 2080, and Frame and Save in Norwalk.
