For the birds … help get them counted

|

Birds of a feather … get counted together. On Sunday.

The National Audubon Society will sponsor its 66th annual Westport Christmas Bird Count from midnight to midnight Sunday, Dec. 16.

Volunteer bird watchers may identify and count bird species and record how many they see of each type within a 15-mile radius of Westport’s twin bridges on Route 57. The coverage area will also include Weston, Fairfield, Darien, Norwalk, Easton and New Canaan.

Small groups of birdwatchers, led by a captain, will patrol pre-assigned territories to maximize coverage, while others will conduct backyard feeder counts in the same areas.

After the count, observers will gather at 6 p.m. to tally the results and have a potluck dinner to discuss the day’s highlights, the release states.

Data from the count and 17 other counts in Connecticut will be given to the society, which has held Christmas bird counts for the past 112 years. Results will be published online in “American Birds” with data from 1700 other counts held throughout the Americas.
