The first weekly session of “Camp Hafaday” has gone quite … swimmingly, as dozens of campers ages 4 to 8 spent weekday mornings getting swim instruction, playing games in the gym, doing arts & crafts and more water fun during free swim.
Campers who enrolled in our new Stewie’s Splash! Hour on Wednesday got a special treat — a visit from not only Stewie the Duck but also his “parents” — Kim and Stew Leonard.
The Family Y has partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities to promote water safety throughout the community. During each week of Hafaday, Wednesday’s from 12:30 to 1:15 pm, there is a special opportunity to meet Stewie the Duck and participate in water safety activities outside of the water. Plus, each child receive a book, a sing-a-long CD and a Personal Flotation Device. (Because Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities is underwriting this event, the cost is only $20/child.)
Over the past two decades, the Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities has been nationally recognized for its drowning prevention efforts and increasing education and awareness about children’s water safety. The foundation has helped to raise millions of dollars to support water safety awareness and education, including swimming scholarships, lifeguard training and water safety equipment.
“We are very proud to team up with the Westport Weston Family Y to achieve shared goals of enriching kids’ lives while keeping them safe and offering skills that will stay with them their whole lives,” said Kim and Stew Leonard. The Leonard family resides in Westport.
“We thank Kim and Stew Leonard for their most generous gift, which have allowed us to devote additional resources to our learn-to-swim programs,” says David Cohen, Vice President, Operations for the Family Y. ”
There are nine more weekly sessions of our Hafaday Summer Swim Lesson Program, beginning this week and continuing on through the week of August 20. Students in swim lessons are grouped by age and ability. The cost for Y Members is $265 per week; $290 for non-members. Though some sessions are now wait-list only, some openings remain.
