Family Y Progress Report, Nov. 16 (with video)

The Westport Weston Family Y’s efforts to restore power and other essential systems to its flood-damaged downtown facility and to secure the necessary approvals to re-open will continue over the weekend and into early next week. The sequence of repairs outlined in our previous update on Wednesday proceed.

When we are able to set a specific date and time for re-opening on a limited basis, we will happily alert the community with an update on

Status of Repairs
A second external generator is now online and supplying temporary power to the electrical panels that serve most of our facility. This progress will allow us to make necessary repairs to other essential systems.

The refurbished switch gear, crucial to restoring power to the Y, arrived on Friday, Nov. 16.

A crucial piece of equipment, the electronic switch gear, has been refurbished and is in the process of being installed.

A new circulator and filter motor for the Stauffer pool is being installed and a new heater was scheduled to arrive today. It will take some days to complete these repairs and then several more days to heat the Stauffer Pool to acceptable levels. Repairs to the Brophy Pool will be completed once the Stauffer Pool re-opens.

Classes & Programs
As we strive to resume operations, we encourage Y Members to continue utilizing other area YMCAs through the “Always Welcome at the Y” AWAY reciprocal program.

Please click here for a schedule of group-fitness classes taking place at alternate sites early next week.

For our swimmers, we’re also pleased to report that the Staples Community Pool will be open to recreational and lap swimming by the public starting Tuesday, Nov. 20. Westport Parks & Recreation has graciously offered to allow Y Members to swim without charge during our temporary closure, provided they show their Membership card. Here is the Staples Pool schedule and information about the policies (please note that swimming at Staples is for children ages 6 and up).

The Family Y’s Water Rat Swim Team is also appreciative of the temporary use of Staples Pool for practice sessions (for some Water Rats, starting at 5:15 am!). We’re also grateful to Intensity Norwalk for hosting spinning workouts for team members.

Allow us to add to our thank-you list the Darien YMCA, for making their Gymnastic Center available to our competition team for a practice this weekend, in addition to those scheduled at Norwalk YMCA.

A Final Note
At a staff briefing on Friday morning, Shelley Moll, health & wellness director, recalled a recent encounter with a Family Y member at the Wilton YMCA. “I said, ‘Hi, Family Y guy,’ because I recognized him but didn’t know his name,” Shelley said. “He laughed and said it was just the same for him — ‘I play basketball all the time at the Family Y,’ he told me, ‘and I consider the other players as my good friends, even though I don’t know any of their last names. I miss the Y, and them.'”

The feeling is mutual, to be sure, and we all look forward to being at the Family Y soon and once again, among our Y family and friends.
