Learn More About Camp Mahackeno in 2013 at Winterfest this Weekend

Camp co-directors Meaghan George and Becky Newman with a terrapin and turtle at Earthplace (Camp Mahackeno's longtime mascot is a snapping turtle from Lees Pond).

The Y and Earthplace, the Nature Discovery Center have announced plans to conduct a joint camp next summer at Earthplace.

Located at 10 Woodside Lane in Westport, Earthplace is situated among a 62-acre wildlife sanctuary that features an interactive natural history museum, over two miles of trails, live animal hall, Birds of Prey and a preschool facility.

Camp Mahackeno, which has been home to the Family Y’s summer day camp since the early 1940s, will be unavailable next summer due to construction of the new Y facility on a portion of the Y’s 32-acre Mahackeno campus along the Saugatuck River, north of downtown Westport.

To learn more about our exciting plans for Mahackeno campers this summer, stop by Earthplace for their annual Winterfest celebration, taking place on Saturday, Jan. 19, 11 am to 3 pm. Our camp directors will be on hand to discuss the combined camp and its nine weekly sessions, each with a special theme.

Winterfest activities include a Horse and Sleigh Ride, REI Snowshoe Demonstration and lots of crafts, from making Snow Catchers and Snow Flakes to Bird Feeders and Animal Track ID Cards.

A Fly Tying and Fly Fishing demonstration by Lilliard Fly Fishing Expeditions takes place at 2 pm. Admission to Winterfest is free, with minimal fees for food (S’mores and hot chocolate!) and rides. For details about Winterfest, visit
