A Vision of the Future for the New Y and Camp at Mahackeno

Work is under way at the Westport Weston Family Y’s Mahackeno campus to prepare for construction of the new Y facility, which will begin as a 54,000 sq. ft. building that will include a 10-lane, 25-yard lap pool and adjacent warm-water family/teaching pool; expansive Health & Wellness Center; multi-purpose Gymnasium; three group-fitness studios; a Child Watch/Kids’ Adventure Gym area; and other amenities of a modern, family-oriented Y facility.

The official groundbreaking ceremony for its new Y facility will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 2 pm. The landmark occasion at Mahackeno will involve leaders from the Y’s volunteer governing boards and staff, major donors, public officials, representatives from local community groups, construction partners, Y members and other supporters. The public is also welcome.

The Y’s lead contractor is Turner Construction Co., the company that has helped our community build the Bedford Middle School and Westport’s Center for Senior Activities, as well as the renovations of Staples High School and Saugatuck Elementary School, among other local projects.

These trees have been tagged to ensure they are protected during the construction process.

Over the past two weeks, Turner and its subcontractors have installed protective barriers to prevent erosion from the building site from entering local waterways and erected fencing around trees to be preserved through the construction process. A trailer has been moved to the site to serve as temporary on-site headquarters and a meeting place. Additional work crews have been taking the steps necessary to properly demolish several existing houses along Sunny Lane and two buildings that have long been a part of Camp Mahackeno’s seasonal operations. (To view more photos of this initial work, please see the photo gallery below.)

Our construction partners are also in the process of clearing the building site of trees, brush and stumps, in preparation for the excavation of the foundation. Our new Y and the ample parking for it will occupy only a small percentage of our Mahackeno campus – less than six acres – and will be situated in the northeast corner of the 32-acre property, bordered by the Merritt Parkway and the escarpment overlooking the Saugatuck River.

Building What Matters – a modern new home for the Family Y – will be a transformative event for the communities it serves. Our Mahackeno campus, home to summer campers since the early 1940s, will now be accessible year-round and offer a range of programming and recreation that is possible in very few places anywhere.

With such major changes taking place at Mahackeno, now and until our new Y opens in late 2014, we asked Meg George, the Family Y’s Camp and Youth Director, for her comments. Meg has been instrumental in helping arrange our Y’s collaboration with Earthplace to conduct a joint camp this summer at their nearby facility while construction proceeds at Mahackeno. No one holds Mahackeno closer to her heart than Meg.

Meg George, Camp and Youth Director for the Family Y.

“Understandably, it can be a little tough for a Mahackeno camper of any era to think of their camp as a construction site. But I know the construction group recognizes and respects the special space that they are working on. They are going out of their way to protect all the trees that they can, and although our field and a portion of the wooded areas of upper camp will be affected during construction, I know a great deal of planning and care has gone into making sure they are returned in as good of condition as our campers deserve and expect.

Yes, in exchange for the new Y facility, we are losing the old Rotary Pavilion and the Arts and Crafts building. Both buildings have served the camp well for many years, but many would agree that their time had come to an end as is. Frankly, both wooden structures were getting to a point that was a bit beyond ‘rustic.’

We’re fortunate that our town’s two Rotary Clubs are generously supporting the construction of one of two new pavilions at Mahackeno. Situated closer to camp operations, these new open-air pavilions will provide the shaded program areas and rainy-day space that any camp our size needs. They will also be used at other times for special events and activities for Y members and, for special occasions like Fall Family Fiesta, the entire community.

Our arts and crafts program will be relocated to Beck Lodge, which also houses our locker rooms for the outdoor pool, the camp store and nurse’s station. Once renovated, the lodge will have a more up-to-date studio feel to it.

The Camp Mahackeno that I see just around the corner will be just as wonderful as the Mahackeno of our memories, even better. Camp areas like Archery and Outdoor Living will be enhanced and re-located slightly, with those moves being made with the campers’ safety in mind.

When most people think of Camp Mahackeno, they think of the ball fields, the pool, canoeing on Lees Pond, and our “LOGS” amphitheater where we start and finish each day of camp. When we return to camp for the summer of 2014, these areas will be very much the same, except for a few improvements to them.

With our new Y on the other side of the brook, Mahackeno will become more than just an amazing summer camp. For many years, the children of our area have brought the site to life for nine short weeks of summer. But then school begins, the equipment gets put away and we put camp “to bed” for nine long months.

Camp Mahackeno's Archery range will be one of the areas to be enhanced during the construction of the new Y

This won’t be the case anymore.  When I picture the future Mahackeno, I see young children enjoying their first fall soccer class on the ball field, while their parents participate in an outdoor Boot Camp class on the trails that wind through the property. I see a group picnic taking place in one of the pavilions, organized by one of our many community partners.

And looking across from camp headquarters to our new Y, I see a Fitness Center filled with people exercising to their own private views of the tree-lined banks of the Saugatuck River. I see an Adventure Gym filled with young children on the cold days of winter. I see Y members of all ages and abilities walking straight from the cars into a modern new (and fully accessible) new Y.

Mahackeno is going to become important in the hearts of many more people than just our campers. All generations are going to find something to enjoy at our beautiful camp property. For those of us who love Mahackeno so much, what a great thing to know that others are going to be able to experience all the site has to offer year-round.”

Family Y to Break Ground at Mahackeno, Feb. 5

by:

A site plan of the building site at Mahackeno, with the first stage of the new facililty in yellow.

The Westport Weston Family Y is pleased to announce that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Y facility on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 2 pm.

The landmark occasion at the Family Y’s Mahackeno Outdoor Center will involve leaders from the Y’s volunteer governing boards and staff, major donors, public officials, representatives from local community groups, construction partners, Y members and other supporters. The public is also welcome.

“Our campaign to fund and construct a modern, sustainable new home for the Family Y has been years’ long and at times imperiled,” said Rob Reeves, Family Y CEO. “But thanks to the steadfast support of our members, the tireless efforts of the volunteer leaders who guide us and the selfless contributions from hundreds of donors from throughout our community and beyond, we are ready to truly ‘Build What Matters.’”

The Town of Westport issued a Zoning Permit for the new facility on Dec. 21, 2012. Site preparation is scheduled to begin Jan. 14. The principal contractor is Turner Construction Co., which has led such local building projects as the Bedford Middle School and the renovations of Saugatuck Elementary School and Staples High School.

The Y expects to receive a Building Permit from the Town in early February for the construction of the first stage of the new Y, a 54,000 sq. ft. facility that will include a 10-lane, 25-yard lap pool and adjacent warm-water family/teaching/therapeutic pool; expansive Health & Wellness Center; multi-purpose Gymnasium; three group-fitness studios; a Child Watch/Kids’ Adventure Gym area; five locker rooms, including one for those with dependent care; and other amenities of a modern, family-oriented Y facility.

The new Y is expected to open in November 2014. Details about the construction project, including a set of Frequently Asked Questions, may be found at www.westporty.org.

A view of our new Y, looking north, to the large windows of the Wellness Center.

The Family Y has also scheduled an informational Q&A session about the construction project. That meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 pm in the 2nd-floor Board Room of the Y’s downtown facility. This meeting is also open to the public, with a special invitation extended to nearly 100 homeowners neighboring the Y’s Mahackeno campus.

“The priorities and concerns of Y members, neighbors and the communities we serve have impacted every facet of the design of our new Y and its development process,” said Rosemary Halstead, past Board president and current chair of the Building What Matters capital campaign. “As the stewards of our beloved Mahackeno property – longtime home of our summer day camp – we are committed to ensuring that construction of our new Y will be undertaken with the utmost regard for protecting the environment, abiding by all regulations required of us and minimizing any inconveniences that come with the construction of a modern new building like the Y.”

Y campaign leaders have raised more than 90 percent of the amount needed to fund construction, through the sale of the downtown facility, donations and Y reserves, and will finance the rest with additional pledges and donations and a prudent amount of borrowing.  For more information about the construction project or how to support the Y’s capital campaign, please contact CEO Rob Reeves at rreeves@westporty.org or 203-226-8981, ext. 131.

The Family Y’s Mahackeno Outdoor Center is located at 14 Sunny Lane, Westport. Turn off Route 33 near the Red Barn Restaurant and proceed along the northbound entrance to the Merritt Parkway Exit 41 interchange. For parking at the groundbreaking ceremony, please follow the directional signs.

The following photo gallery includes photos of the site preparation process, getting under way this week. Please see the captions for details. The second gallery features new architectural renderings showing what the outside and inside of the new Y will look like. Enjoy!

New Views (and Video) of New Family Y at Mahackeno

by:

With our long-awaited Zoning Permit in hand, the Westport Weston Family Y is proceeding with plans to begin construction of our new Family Y on our Mahackeno campus. We will soon announce the date of our groundbreaking.

As our campaign to fund and construct a sustainable, modern and fully accessible new home for the Y enters the build-out phase, we’ve created a new video and renderings that showcase what our new Y will look like from both the outside and inside. (Click on the image above to view the 6-minute video; see below for a photo gallery of architectural illustrations.)

The first stage of the new Family Y will be a 54,000 sq. ft. facility that will include a 10-lane lap pool and warm-water family/teaching pool; expansive Health & Wellness Center; Gymnasium for multiple sports and activities; three large group-fitness studios; a Child Watch/Kids’ Adventure Gym area; and other amenities of a full-service, family-oriented Y facility.

Our new Y is expected to open in November, 2014.

Designed by the renowned architectural firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the building will be situated on the northeast corner of the property, bordered by the Merritt Parkway and the escarpment overlooking the Saugatuck River. Camp Mahackeno, our community’s storied summer day camp, is located just across scenic Poplar Plains Brook from the new Y facility.

The Y's Mahackeno campus, with the first stage of the new Y outlined in yellow.

Such a location offered more than ease of access; the building itself will serve as a buffer between the roadway and the rest of the property. Setting the building along and within the southern-facing ledge not only helped minimize its footprint and energy use, it also opened up a magnificent vista.

“The Family Y’s Mahackeno Outdoor Center afforded us a magnificent opportunity to construct a state-of-the-art facility,” said Robert Stern, FAIA, Founder and Senior Partner of Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

Locating the new Y facility on these grounds will be a transformative event for the communities we serve. The 32-acre campus will now be accessible year-round and offer a range of programming and recreation that is possible in very few places anywhere.

The property will be cared for in a way that is consistent with the Y’s long-standing commitment to stewardship of the environment. The acres of open space of woodlands, riparian habitat and existing camp and recreational space will be maintained – indeed, enhanced.

Imagine these possibilities at a new Family Y at Mahackeno:

• Wooded trails for walking, jogging and cross-country skiing
• Riverside benches along the restored banks of the Saugatuck River
• Canoeing and other activities on Lees Pond
• Integrated environmental education programs

The inside of the building will be designed to a high standard of energy efficiency, with the goal that our new Y will be a standard-setter for environmental sensitivity, said Kevin Smith. A longtime Westporter, Smith is a Partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) and serves as Project Manager.

Upon completion of all construction stages, the Family Y at Mahackeno will comprise 102,000 sq. ft. and will include a Gymnastics Center, Child Care wing and expanded Aquatics and Health & Wellness areas.

To date, our campaign to “Build What Matters” has raised more than 90 percent of the necessary funds.  To be on sound financial footing by the time we open our doors in late 2014, we must raise a further $4 million. To find out how you can help, please call Paul Bernetksy, Chief Development Officer, at 203-226-8981, ext. 115, or email pbernetsky@westporty.org.

Earthplace and Mahackeno to Collaborate on 2013 Summer Camp

by:

Meaghan George and Becky Newman with a terrapin and turtle at Earthplace (Camp Mahackeno's longtime mascot is a snapping turtle from Lees Pond).

The Westport Weston Family Y and Earthplace, the Nature Discovery Center have announced plans to conduct a joint camp next summer at Earthplace. Located at 10 Woodside Lane in Westport, Earthplace is situated among a 62-acre wildlife sanctuary that features an interactive natural history museum, over two miles of trails, live animal hall, Birds of Prey and a preschool facility.

Camp Mahackeno, which has been home to the Family Y’s summer day camp since the early 1940s, will be unavailable next summer due to construction of the new Y facility on a portion of the Y’s 32-acre Mahackeno campus along the Saugatuck River, north of downtown Westport.

“We’re so excited about this partnership,” says Meaghan George, Camp and Youth Director for the Family Y. “Our Mahackeno campers will be in a wonderfully natural setting that’s close to our longtime home and that will also provide them great new opportunities to learn about nature, science and the environment while having fun.”

“We’re delighted to be able to host the Y’s Mahackeno counselors and campers next summer,” agrees Becky Newman, Camp Director for Earthplace. “Not only will our campers have access to the Y’s pools for free swim throughout the summer, the Y’s campers will experience a variety of Earthplace activities including pond studies, trail walks and animal encounters.”

Part of Earthplace's 62-acre property that will be used for some camp activities next summer.

Combining the two camp programs will require considerable teamwork among the two staffs as well as some enhancements to Earthplace’s current camp facilities. Camp capacity will increase to 175 campers, from grades 1 through 11. (Earthplace’s preschool program, which serves up to 50 children entering Kindergarten or younger, will continue to be registered and served by Earthplace staff.)

The combined camp operations next summer will also allow both nonprofit organizations to continue their charitable work with the towns of Westport and Weston, as well as with agencies such as the Fresh Air Fund, to provide scholarships and other financial assistance that will make it possible for deserving children to attend camp and to benefit from the life lessons summer camp offers all children.

Camp co-directors George and Newman are currently finalizing the weekly themes for the 2013 season as well as enrollment and registration procedures. Further information about the combined camp will be provided in coming weeks.  Be sure to visit both websites for the most up-to-date information.

“Talk about a win-win – I know both camps will learn new things from the one another about how to make our great local camp programs even better,” says Rob Reeves, Family Y CEO. “We thank Earthplace for giving our Mahackeno campers this opportunity next summer, and we look forward to collaborating in the future, sharing our facilities and expertise to serve local families and the community as a whole.”

Marie Dalton-Meyer, Interim Executive Director at Earthplace, welcomes this new partnership with Family Y. “We look forward to this collaboration, which offers great learning opportunities to all who attend and enables two great organizations a chance to work together on creating a new way to serve the community.”

“Once we’re at Mahackeno permanently, we’ll be using our outdoor pool from early Spring, through camp season, to late in the Fall, so this new equipment will be a vital benefit to those who would like to access the pool,” said Family Y CEO Rob Reeves. “We’re very honored to receive this recognition and want to thank Jo Fuchs Luscombe, Committee Chair Rose Jordan, and other members of The Westport Woman’s Club. It’s through their good works that our Family Y will be able to serve all members of our community.”

by:

It was a gorgeous day for the Y’s seventh annual Fall Family Fiesta — the weather kept getting nicer through the afternoon, as scores of local families enjoyed a host of games and special activities at our Camp Mahackeno facility.

Special thanks to Camp and Youth Director Meg George and all our volunteers for setting up such a fun day of (free) play for so many local families. And a tip of the toque to our grilling crew, headed up by Joan Vitali, who kept all our Fiesta-goers supplied with hot dogs, baked beans, vegetarian chili and other goodies.

For those of you who enjoyed the day with us, take a scroll through the photo gallery below and see if you can spot yourselves or friends. And for those who missed out on this year’s Fall Family Fiesta, let’s all hope that construction of our new Y at Mahackeno is far enough along next fall for us to be able to continue this fine and fun family tradition!

The seventh annual Fall Family Fiesta will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 1 pm to 4 pm at Mahackeno Outdoor Center. The Westport Weston Family Y’s signature fall family event is free and open to everyone in the community.

Children of all ages are invited to the 32-acre Mahackeno campus, longtime home of the Y’s summer day camp and future home of the new Y. “We’ll have lots of food and games, with both our climbing wall and zip line in operation, and we’ll continue our tradition of decorating sugar pumpkins for the kids to take home,” says Meaghan George, Family Y Camp & Youth Director and coordinator of this year’s Fall Family Fiesta.

Among the special activities planned for the day:

  • Pumpkin decorating
  • ‘People’ BINGO
  • Climbing wall (1 to 2 pm)
  • Zip line (2:30-3:30 pm)
  • Hot dogs, snacks and beverages
  • Gymnastics Showtime exhibition team performance,  1:30-2:30 pm

Family Y volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the future home of the Family Y, scheduled to begin construction later this fall.

Past scenic Poplar Plains Brook, on Camp Mahackeno’s blacktop court, the Family Y’s acclaimed Gymnastics Showtime exhibition team will give a special performance. Lunch fare includes grilled hot dogs, plus an array of salads and healthful snacks and beverages. A DJ will supply a musical backdrop to the festivities.

There’s more than fun and games at this year’s Fall Family Fiesta: The Family Y is pleased to host Solarize Westport, a newly launched effort by the Town of Westport’s Green Task Force to equip local homes with low-cost solar power.

“The Family Y is all about youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” says Rob Reeves, Family Y CEO. “All of that comes together at our season-ending event at Mahackeno, the Fall Family Fiesta.”

Free parking is available at Mahackeno’s Sunny Lane entrance. Turn off Route 33 near the Red Barn restaurant and proceed along the northbound entrance to the Merritt Parkway. Stay right and follow Sunny Lane to the end. For more information, please visit www.westporty.org or contact Meaghan George at mgeorge@westporty.org or 203-226-8981.
