Family Y Opens Registration for Summer Session Classes

by:

Pages from Summer_2013_Program_Brochure-3Registration for the Family Y’s Summer Session of classes and programs is now under way. Summer classes and programs at the Y’s downtown facility start the week of June 24, with most continuing through the week of August 19.

Enrollment for the Family Y’s array of summer camps and programs, including the Earthplace-Mahackeno partnership and Hafaday Summer Swim Program, are ongoing, with some weekly sessions nearing capacity in each.

The Y – a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility – exists to strengthen community. The Y offers a unique combination of programs that improve health, nurture youth, and connect members of all ages to their neighbors and community. It’s the place where can you get back into a sport you used to enjoy, take a class with your spouse or child, or enjoy regular time together as a family.

Adult Y members and their guests take part in pickup basketball games at lunchtime; moms and dads help their young children learn how to be safe in the water through parent-child aquatics classes or improve their motor skills at Toddler Adventure Gym; families work out together in our Fitness Center or stride side-by-side on the treadmills and elliptical machines in the Cardio Center.

A complete listing of activities offered at the Family Y may be found in our 28-page online brochure, along with online registration for all summer classes, camps and programs.

The Family Y also offers a number of activities that are open to everyone in the community.

On Saturday, May 18, the Y hosts its first-ever Holistic Health Day. “Holistic” health is an approach to life that focuses on complete body health and the relationship between your environment and your health. It emphasizes the connection of the spirit, mind and body.
Find out for yourself by joining in a variety of classes and special activities, from Tai Chi to Qigong to Acupuncture, taking place in our Bedford and Bresslin Rooms from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Ping Pong is a popular activity at Youth Fun Night at the Y.

And later on Saturday, May 18, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm, the Family Y turns into a “clubhouse for tweens” for Youth Fun Night. On Youth Fun Nights, the Y is open just for 4th to 7th graders from the Westport and Weston school districts, no membership required. Kids can join friends, neighbors, and classmates for an evening of swimming, basketball, games and ice cream. The cost is $12 in advance; $15 at the door. For details or to register, visit http://www.westporty.org.

Y members and non-members alike also have a multitude of options for Y day camps and special programs taking place this summer. The Y’s downtown facility conducts weeklong specialty camps throughout the summer, for young gymnasts, dancers, basketball, lacrosse and more, as well as a variety of learn-to-swim programs.

The Y’s popular Hafaday Summer Swim Lesson Program is designed for children ages 4 to 8 and is held each weekday from 8:45 am to 12:30 pm. Hafaday is primarily a swim program, with both a lesson and a free swim period each day. Arts and crafts, music and gym time, including yoga, karate, and games round out each morning of fun. Parents are encouraged to sign up their children soon, as most sessions fill to capacity.

And according to Meg George, Camp and Youth Director, the Y’s special collaboration, Earthplace-Mahackeno Summer Camp 2013, is already close to capacity for some grades and weekly sessions. This one-year partnership, the result of Camp Mahackeno’s hiatus during construction of the new Y facility, will take place at Earthplace, The Nature Discovery Center, a 62-acre nature sanctuary and educational center in the Old Hill section of Westport. Because of the combined operations this year, enrollment is limited.

Says Meg: “We’ve added a few spaces to our 3rd Grade group, but only by borrowing some spots from other grades. We currently have less than 10 spots left in all the sessions for Grades 5, 6 and 7. And many of our sessions for Grades 1, 2 and 3 are more than half full.”

“Interestingly, most of the campers currently signed up are new to either camp,” Meg notes.

“Unlike previous summers at Mahackeno, once sessions and grades are full this summer, we won’t be able to add any groups at the last minute,” she adds. “Please keep this in mind as you make your summer plans. We don’t want to see anyone miss out on a chance to be a part of Earthplace-Mahackeno Summer Camp 2013.”

Nationally, the Y engages 9 million youth and 12 million adults in 10,000 communities across the U.S. The Family Y serves 5,500 members who live and work in Westport, Weston and surrounding communities. Our current membership represents 15 percent of the towns we serve and 25 percent of all local youth. Nearly 40 percent of all local grade-school children are active in Family Y programs and special activities.

A Report on the Family Y’s Community Impact

by:

The Westport Weston Family Y has a tremendous impact on our community, touching lives of all ages. Our current membership of 5,500 individuals represents 15 percent of the towns we serve and 25 percent of our youth. Nearly 40 percent of all local grade-school children are active in Family Y programs and special activities!

Widening smiles, and Horizons, at the Family Y. Each summer the Y hosts kids from GFA's Horizons program for free swim time.

A charitable, nonprofit organization, the Y is committed to offering our programs, facilities and services to all, regardless of their ability to pay. In 2012, the financial assistance we provided to local individuals totaled $321,500 and included:

* $120,000 in direct aid to those in need of child care;
* $83,000 in scholarships for children to attend Camp Mahackeno;
* $79,000 in subsidized or free memberships to neighbors in need.

A Center of Community Life
The Y enriches everybody in our community, whether they use the facility or not, by keeping our children and teens active and involved in socially productive activities. Last year, 130 7th graders enrolled in our 7th Grade Membership Initiative, a new program that gives all local 7th graders free one-year membership to the Y. Hundreds more local 4th-7th graders attended the Y’s Youth Fun Nights, held once a month on Saturdays at the Y.

The Family Y provides space and resources to many community groups, hosting a number of community-wide events that are open to all, including First Night Westport/Weston, Healthy Kids Day and Fall Family Fiesta. In 2012, our Y’s community outreach and in–kind support to nonprofit partners amounted to $164,000. In all, our Family Y gave back $486,000 in total community support in 2012.

The Family Y fulfills a role in our community unlike any other organization. We partner with an unparalleled array of other community groups, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs. The Y is a welcoming place for those whose specific needs are cared for by the many local and national organizations the Y partners with in service to our community.

This year's Soles4Souls used-shoe drive takes place Apr. 1-12.

* For the past 35 years, the Family Y has hosted weekly swim, gym and other activities for individuals with special needs served by Our Vision;
* In collaboration with Norwalk Hospital, our Cancer Survivors Program provides cancer patients with 3-month free memberships and customized programs to support recovery;
* Since our founding in 1923, we’ve taught more than 33,000 local kids and adults how to swim. To further enhance water safety, in 2012 we partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities and The ZAC Foundation on a variety of special aquatics camps and programs.

The Y is for Social Responsibility
At the Y, giving back and providing support to our neighbors is our cause. In the aftermath of weather emergencies, our Family Y opens its door to all in the community as a warm, welcoming place of refuge. We are proud to serve as a collection location for a number of charitable ventures, from our Holiday Giving Tree and food banks to Prom Dress and Soles4Souls collections.

The Family Y would also like to express its gratitude to our partners, donors, staff and the 258 Y volunteers who together donated 11,277 hours of their time and talent in 2012. Their help allows our Y to continue to fulfill its mission to develop and nurture our youth, promote healthy living for all and foster a sense of social responsibility throughout the communities we have served for the past 90 years.

Youth Fun Night at the Y: Photo Highlights from March 9

by:

On Youth Fun Nights, the Westport Weston Family Y is open just for 4th to 7th graders! This past Saturday, dozens of kids from local schools turned the Y into their own private clubhouse. As always, the Upper Gym was packed with basketballers, the diving board in the Stauffer Pool saw lots of action, and the Bingo sessions in the Bedford Room were boisterous.

And as you can see from the photo gallery above and the photo below, the Ping Pong table in the Upstairs Studio was a popular new attraction — until it was put out of action for the night after a particularly athletic “save” of a cross-table volley.

The final Youth Fun Night of the 2012-13 school year is May 18. Mark your calendars, and visit the Family Y’s website for the registration forms and more information about this Westport & Weston institution.

Youth Fun Night at the Y, Saturday, Sept. 15, for 4th-7th Graders

by:

The Family Y will hold its first Youth Fun Night of the school year on Saturday, Sept. 15, 7:30-9:30 pm.

All local 4th-7th graders are welcome to participate as the Family Y transforms into our community’s clubhouse for tweens and teens only.

Activities include free-swim time in the Stauffer pool and open gym for basketball and other games, mega-inflatables, bingo with prizes, and the ever-popular “make-your-own-sundae” station.

Mostly, our monthly Youth Fun Nights gives local kids a chance to hang out in a safe, fun-filled place with their friends, and make some new ones.

“Kids today, especially the middle-school crowd, need a safe and welcoming ‘home away from home’ that allows them to get away from the TV and their video-game consoles for an evening,” says Meaghan George, coordinator of the event. “It’s what we do every day, really, but kids like the fact that on Youth Fun Night, it’s unstructured play – good, old-fashioned active fun.”

The Family Y’s monthly Youth Fun Nights are open to Y Members and Non-Members alike and attract upwards of 150 local kids. The cost is $12 pre-purchased at the Y or online; $15 at the door.

Click Youth Night Online Registration to sign up now; if you’re new to Youth Fun Nights,  register ahead of time and skip the long check in line. All participants must also sign a waiver and code of conduct and bring it with them. The form is available here as a pdf; you can also have a parent complete the form and drop it off.

Calling All Local 7th Graders! Sign Up Now for Free Y Membership

by:

Y Member Marta Clanton, one of this year's 7th Grade Members.

The Westport Weston Family Y is once again providing free memberships to students in the Westport and Weston school districts who are entering the 7th grade this fall. The offer took effect following the end of the current school year in the Westport and Weston school districts and is valid through the end of the 2012-2013 school year. The Family Y’s 7th Grade Membership Initiative is also available to students attending private and parochial schools in those districts.

“The Family Y would like to help our youth choose a lifestyle that includes physical activity, character values and community involvement,” said David Cohen, Vice President of Operations. “The 7th Grade Membership Initiative is proving to be a terrific way to engage, educate and connect to our youth, right when they need it most.”

Modeled after similar initiatives at Ys across the country, the goal of the Family Y’s 7th Grade Membership Initiative is to promote the well-being of young adolescents at a critical juncture in their development, with enhanced self-esteem and increased understanding of the importance of exercise and healthy nutrition throughout the teen years and into adulthood.

Introduced a year ago, the program attracted some 130 7th graders. Free programs and activities available include open swims and open gyms, fitness orientations, special group exercise classes, racquet sports and spinning classes. There are also volunteer opportunities and special youth activities, such as Youth Fun Nights, held monthly during the school year. Visit www.westporty.org for a current schedule of offerings.

“When I saw the flyer, I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of,” said Marta Clanton, a student at Bedford Middle School. “There are no other gyms around town that I know of where a 12 year old can get fitness training with the FitLinxx program and keep track of what exercising they have done. The Y is also just a fun place to hang out and have fun with other 7th graders who use it.”

To activate their free membership, students must bring to the Family Y a school ID or report card, as well as a parent or guardian. Students are required to take part in a group tour of the facility and orientation sessions in the Fitness Center to learn how to use the equipment safely.

Funding to support the 7th Grade Initiative is made possible by the generosity of the contributors to the Family Y’s annual Strong Kids Campaign, which is used for financial assistance for memberships, programs, child care and camp scholarships. For details about the 7th Grade Membership Initiative, contact Meaghan George, Camp and Youth Director, at 203-226-8981, ext. 179, or mgeorge@westporty.org. For more information about the Strong Kids Campaign or to make a donation, please visit www.westporty.org.

Youth Fun Nights

One of the most popular regular attractions for seventh graders is our Youth Fun Nights, held monthly during the school year. On one Saturday night a month, the whole Y shuts down, just for 4th to 7th graders! Join friends, neighbors, and classmates at the Family Y for an evening of fun! Swimming, basketball, games, and make-your-own sundae create a great Saturday night. Youth Fun Nights are a Westport & Weston institution and the best way to be with friends or meet new ones.

Swinging away at Youth Fun Night!

We had another action-packed evening at the Family Y’s last Youth Fun Night of the school year on Saturday, May 19.

As always, the Family Y was abuzz with local 4th-7th graders taking part in all manner of good, ol’ fashioned fun (and good ol’ fashioned ice cream sundaes!).

One of the big hits was a new mega-inflatable — a batting cage in which the ball floated on a cushion of air. Home run!

The Stauffer Pool’s diving board got a lot of action, and upstairs in the Board Room, our Extreme Bingo sessions drew a crowd, too.

‘March Madness’ Highlights the Family Y’s Youth Fun Night

by:

A slam dunk punctuates the March Madness part of Youth Fun Night.

Every Youth Fun Night at the Family Y is the setting for youthful frivolity and fun.   On one Saturday night a month, the Family Y is open just for students in grades 4-7. Call it a modern-day clubhouse for tweens and teens only.

This past Saturday, more than 150 kids packed the Family Y. As usual, our sundae station was a big hit. And with NCAA March Madness upon us, our Upper Gym was filled with kids playing three-on-three games at either end of the court, while center court was the stage for an impromptu slam-dunk contest.

“Kids today, especially the middle-school crowd, need a safe and welcoming ‘home away from home’ that allows them to get away from the TV and their video-game consoles for an evening,” says Meg George, coordinator of the event. “It’s what we do every day, really, but kids like the fact that on Youth Fun Night, it’s unstructured play – good, old-fashioned active fun.”

Our next Youth Fun Night is  Saturday, May 19, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Join your friends, classmates and neighbors for basketball, games, inflatables, swimming – and top it off by making your own sundae with all the fixins’. The cost is  $12 pre-purchased at the Y or on-line at westporty.org; $15 at the door (Family Y membership not required).

If your child with special needs would enjoy attending Youth Fun Night and needs assistance, please contact Meg George, Director of Camp & Youth, at mgeorge@westporty.org or 203-226-8981 x179. She will do her best to match a youth/adult volunteer or staff with your child.

See all you kids in May, and in the meantime, enjoy these photos from our March Madness Youth Fun Night.
