Bridgeport Hospital to celebrates nurses week

Bridgeport Hospital will observe Nurses Week (which officially runs from May 6 to May 12) with a series of activities and recognition events beginning May 5. The hospital is the workplace for more than 600 nurses who perform a variety of roles in both direct patient care and support operations.

This year’s Nurses Week theme is “Advocating, Leading, Caring.” Activities planned at the hospital include an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 9, and complimentary chair massages and gift distribution to the patient care staff on other days of the week.

On Saturday, May 5, Bridgeport Hospital nurses will take part in a community service clean-up project at Bridgeport’s Seaside Park, beginning at 11 a.m.

On Monday, May 7, the hospital’s medical staff will present its annual Nurse Manager of the Year Award during a ceremony on Monday, May 7, 4:30 p.m. at Ralph’n’Rich’s Restaurant in Bridgeport. The award recognizes outstanding nursing leadership at the hospital.

Twelve Bridgeport Hospital nurses have been selected to receive Florence Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing at a regional reception, Thursday, May 10, 5:00 p.m., at Stamford’s Hilton Hotel. They are Rula Eid of Trumbull, Major Surgery Unit; Kim Falsetti of Shelton, Patient Care Services; Astrid Garcia of Shelton, Endoscopy Suite; Andrea Januski of Stratford, Patient Care Services; Lee Ann Jimmie of Shelton, Performance Management Department; Candace Maffei of Danbury, Geriatric Psychiatry Unit; Jacinta Mericnyak of Shelton, Resource Support Unit; Carol Sheridan of Stratford, MedEase Ambulatory Medicine Unit; Caren Silhavey of Stratford, Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing; Lillie Toni of Stratford, Emergency Department; Marlene Pressoir of Stratford, Labor & Delivery Unit; and Mary Toohey-Repko of Stratford, Major Surgery Unit.

Leading up to Nurses Week, 93 Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing students will mark the successful completion of their studies during commencement exercises on Friday, May 4, beginning at 3:00 p.m., at Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

Of the 93 graduates, 47 are from the December 2011 accelerated class and 46 are from the May 2012 two-year class. All 47 members of the 16-month December accelerated class have already taken and passed the Connecticut licensure exam, and many have accepted positions at Bridgeport Hospital.
