As of Jan. 1, 62,153 Connecticut residents will be covered by plans they enrolled in on the state’s health insurance exchange, Access Health CT.
Monday was the deadline to enroll in the programs if you wished to be covered by the first of the year. However, those who haven’t enrolled and are still interested have until March 31 to do so. “We’re delighted to have enrolled so many Connecticut residents in health care coverage for January 1st; however, our work is far from done,” said Access Health CT CEO Kevin Counihan in a news release. “Over the remaining three months of open enrollment, we will continue aggressive outreach to enroll even more consumers and small businesses in quality, affordable health care coverage.”
The exchange is one of many that have been developed in the country as part of the sweeping health reform legislation known as the Affordable Care Act, designed to provide coverage to millions of Americans. Not all states have their own exchange, and most have been reliant on the federal website HealthCare.gov, which has experienced multiple technical problems. Because of those issues, the federal government postponed the deadline to sign up for coverage through the site until today. But Connecticut had no such extension.
More than 6,700 Connecticut residents and small businesses enrolled for health care coverage on Monday, more than double prior enrollment results for a single day. Of those who signed up through the exchange, 34,295 bought a plan offered by one of the three insurance carriers on the exchange, and 27,858 enrolled in some form of Medicaid.
Consumers who have already enrolled will receive an invoice from their insurance carrier that must be paid by Jan. 10 for coverage effective Jan. 1. After the premium payments are received by the carrier, new member materials, including identification cards and welcome packets will be mailed out. At that time, any questions regarding coverage should be directed to the carrier company.
