Rosa DeLauro is on the Wrong Side of Freedom!

The provision in the Obama healthcare bill which requires health insurance to cover basic preventative services for women would also mandate that religious-affiliated organizations, including hospitals and schools, provide coverage for contraception in employee health insurance plans.

The above mentioned organizations should absolutely not be compelled by our federal government to purchase insurance policies that violate their religious and moral conviction. The reason for this is simple.

It is, in my opinion, a violation of the First Amendment.
The first Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;”

To mandate that any church must pay for, purchase, or provide for the purchase of any service or product that violates the beliefs of that church is unconstitutional and un-American.

It is like saying that Rabbis can no longer perform circumcisions because that is a medical procedure and must be done in the hospital when the child is born or not at all.

It is like saying that the Muslim custom of Sawm, or fasting during Ramadan is not in keeping with healthy nutritional practices as recommended by government standards and must not be allowed in the workplace.

This issue is not about birth control or abortion or even Catholics. This issue is all about the First Amendment and Freedom of Conscience, which, by the way simply, means the freedom to believe in the God of your choice and the freedom to worship and practice accordingly.

Once the Federal Government is able to regulate what must be condoned and practiced in one faith, it can regulate what must be condoned and practiced in all faiths.

By supporting this un-American mandate, Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro is choosing to put politics first and religious freedom second.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro says. “As both a Catholic and an advocate of women’s health, I believe that these guidelines strike the necessary balance between increasing access to health care services for women while respecting the religious beliefs of all Americans,”

DeLauro said she is “proud to support what I believe to be a profoundly moral decision by the Administration and a well-crafted compromise that maintains existing federal conscience protections and allows women access to contraceptive services without mandating that one use it or be required to dispense it.”

I say DeLauro is flat wrong and that this is an unprecedented and dangerous overreaching by the Federal Government.

Once again Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro is in lock-step with the current administration and out-of-step with the American people.

It is time for a change in CT’s 3rd District.

Where is the Bliss in New Haven?

The city of New Haven tops the Careerbliss.com list of unhappiest cities in America for work in 2012. I would venture to guess though, that even the most disgruntled employees in the Elm City are still happier than many of their unemployed neighbors. As of November 2011 the unemployment rate in New Haven was 8.7% .

One sure way to improve the work climate in a city is to bring in more jobs. This is done by first creating a business-friendly environment where companies can grow and earn a profit and by providing for a well educated workforce that is ready and capable to work for those companies.

Government does not and cannot create jobs out of thin air. A job is created when someone is able to sell a product or service at a profit and hires someone else to help them do it.

Government CAN facilitate this process but it can’t replicate it.

Unfortunately our government is failing the American people at all levels. The President appears to believe that government should be the provider of all security and nourishment for all people even if that government has to bury itself under a mountain of debt to do so. On one hand President Obama delays the XL pipeline project which would create between 4,000 and 20,000 jobs, (depending on who’s numbers you choose to believe) and contribute to lowering energy costs in America. (by the way high energy cost is a big reason why Connecticut is so unattractive to business).
I use the term “delayed” rather than “rejected” in the case of the pipeline because I am confident that our president will eventually approve the project. He is just waiting until AFTER all the environmentalists vote for his reelection before he kicks them under the bus.
On the other hand President Obama is asking to increase our already unsustainable national debt.

Meanwhile, Connecticut’s congressional delegation is perched in the amen corner shouting, “Do your thing Mr. President.” as they rubberstamp every tax-raising, job-killing policy that comes along.

Here at home, our Governor, Dannel P. Malloy, upon realizing that the biggest tax increase in state history isn’t the magic revenue bullet he thought it would be is apparently now trying to mollify and further fleece Connecticut residents by plying us with Sunday booze and internet gambling, which of course would provide more tax revenue so the state can keep spending.

Which brings us back to the local level, in New Haven we have high unemployment today and a school system that is failing its students in such a way as to ensure they will be unemployable tomorrow. When you compare New Haven to other cities of its size in our state, do you see many supermarkets, large businesses, or other businesses opportunities? No. Regulations hamper any citizen’s efforts to create these businesses and jobs. And Lord knows the city could use them. But instead we have a … mayor who’s only answer is to propose giving the vote to non-citizens so he can remain employed.

Is it any wonder that people aren’t happy?

It is time for new leadership that will get our state and our nation moving in the right direction again.

That is how we ALL win!

Obama’s Double Standards are Showing

The U.S. national debt is now as big as the entire U.S. economy. The amount of money the federal government owes to its creditors, combined with IOUs to government retirement and other programs, now tops $15.23 trillion. That’s roughly equal to the value of all goods and services the U.S. economy produces in one year: $15.17 trillion as of September, the latest estimate.

Dear reader, if you or I had a debt-to-income ratio is now one hundred percent we would practically need a co-signer to pay cash, let alone borrow more money.

But borrow more money is exactly what President Barack Obama wants to do.

Interestingly enough, back in 2008 Senator Obama accused President George W. Bush of being “irresponsible.” And “unpatriotic” for running up the national debt.

Perhaps President Obama is hoping that “we the people” will forget this little tidbit and not hold him accountable for his obvious double standard when it comes to increasing the nation’s debt.

As Keith Koffler writes,
“The new borrowing requested by the CURRENT president would raise the debt ceiling to $16.4 trillion. The debt stood at $10.6 trillion when Obama took office. That’s an increase of $5.8 trillion, nearly $2 trillion more than the “unpatriotic” figure cited by Obama in the video.
Obama has done nothing during his three years as president to address the central cause of the debt run up – the unsustainable increases in entitlement spending.”
And he has actually worsened the deficit with a feckless $800 billion stimulus bill and a new $1 trillion health care entitlement.
So this is not the Bush deficit. It is the Obama deficit, and it’s threatening to ruin the country. Read more here

We are running up a debt that our great-grand children won’t be able to pay off.

By the way, our founding fathers warned of this.
Thomas Jefferson said it was immoral for one generation to pass on its debts to next generation. He wrote:

“…we shall consider ourselves unauthorized to saddle posterity with our debts, and morally bound to pay them ourselves; and consequently within what may be deemed the period of a generation, or the life expectancy of the majority.”

We have to get off the debt train before it derails and takes our entire economy with it.

We must send leaders to Washington who get it and have the courage to roll up their sleeves and do the hard work necessary to turn this country around.

The Promise of America is Still Alive

Wayne Winsley
In America, you can be or achieve anything you want through a combination of education, determination and hard work.

That is the promise of America. That is the reason that immigrants from all over the world have come to our shores since the very birth of America as a nation. That is why they still come today. America is the one place where you can arrive penniless and end up a multimillionaire. You can be born dirt-poor but die with more wealth than your grand-children can spend.

That promise is what makes America the unique and prosperous nation that it is. And that promise is not as dead as many people would have you believe.

Here as just a few names of people who attained the promise.
Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs (Apple), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Sergey Brin (Google), Sam Walton (Wal-Mart), Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway).

Each of these people are or were a part of the 1 percent. They represent that elite group of people that have been singled out to bear the lion’s share of the blame for our current economic woes.

I ask but three questions here.

1: Are the people listed here evil?

2: Have they contributed to American society and improved the lives of many of the 99 percent? (I must admit, I have an I-phone, Use Facebook and Google, and shop at Wal-Mart.)

3: don’t we all want our children to have the opportunity to achieve this level of success?

Each of the people listed above have one important thing in common. They all started out as ordinary people just like you and me. Oprah was born dirt-poor in Mississippi, Steve Jobs worked on the first Apple computer in a garage. Sam Walton’s first job in retail paid him only seventy-five dollars a month.

To paraphrase Bradley Schiller’s column published in the News Times on Dec. 11th,
The Occupy Movement is venting its anger at the 1 percent but the truth is, a weak economy, high unemployment, and record foreclosures have more to do with Washington than Wall Street. Policy failures and political deadlocks have left far too many people feeling disenfranchised and disconnected from the promise of America.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush wrote the following in a recent column,

“Congressman Paul Ryan recently coined a smart phrase to describe the core concept of economic freedom: “The right to rise.”
Think about it. We talk about the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, the right to assembly. The right to rise doesn’t seem like something we should have to protect.
But we do. We have to make it easier for people to do the things that allow them to rise. We have to let them compete. We need to let people fight for business. We need to let people take risks. We need to let people fail. We need to let people suffer the consequences of bad decisions. And we need to let people enjoy the fruits of good decisions, even good luck.
That is what economic freedom looks like. Freedom to succeed as well as to fail, freedom to do something or nothing.

The right to rise does not require a libertarian utopia to exist. Rather, it requires fewer, simpler and more outcome-oriented rules. Rules for which an honest cost-benefit analysis is done before their imposition. Rules that sunset so they can be eliminated or adjusted as conditions change. Rules that have disputes resolved faster and less expensively through arbitration than litigation.
In Washington, D.C., rules are going in the opposite direction. They are exploding in reach and complexity. They are created under a cloud of uncertainty, and years after their passage nobody really knows how they will work.” Read more here.

The role of government is not to shape the marketplace but to help prepare its citizens to prosper from it.
When more people realize the promise of America, we ALL win.

Would Day Care Workers Prefer Unions or Health Insurance?

Wayne Winsley

Two executive orders signed by Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in September provide a path for state day care workers and personal care attendants to organize and gain collective bargaining rights.
The orders established working groups to make recommendations to the governor regarding the best way to structure bargaining rights for the groups. Read more here

I have questions as to the cost-to-benefit ratio of unionizing day care workers and personal care attendants. Would it really benefit the workers and how would it impact the users of those services? I also question whether or not Governor Malloy’s order is even constitutional.

Rather than debate those questions here, I will take the opportunity to discuss an idea that has been proposed before by others and that I believe would benefit both union and non-union workers alike.
Many of the workers in the two groups mentioned here do not have healthcare benefits because of their status as independent contractors.

Well, what if they could be recognized as a single buyer then they could purchase health insurance at a greatly discounted rate. In other words, daycare providers could purchase insurance as a group and so could personal care attendants as well as plumbers, construction workers etc…
Insurance companies would see increased profit due to volume and workers, many of whom don’t have coverage now, would access to affordable coverage. This would be a clear benefit than would not impose a financial burden on those that need the services and it would not have ramifications on the providers of the services.
It would be a win-win situation.

Affordable healthcare choices and not government mandated insurance whether you want it or not.
And by the way, I’m not anti-union. I want to grow union membership by helping more people get jobs.
I’d love to what you think about the idea.

Naugatuck Welcomes Winsley

By Ronald DeRosa Naugatuck Patch

Motivational speaker Wayne Winsley made it clear to the Naugatuck Republican Town Committee on Wednesday that he’s not a politician.

“I’m an American who is simply fed up and refuses to sit back and watch as the country I love is spent into oblivion and our children’s future is mortgage to the Hill,” Winsley told a gathering of committee members during their monthly meeting Wednesday evening at Town Hall.

A 20-year veteran of broadcast radio and veteran of the U.S. Navy, Winsley, 48, recently relocated to Naugatuck from New Milford in his bid to run against longtime Democratic incumbent Rosa DeLauro. DeLauro, who won reelection handedly in 2010 after defeating then-candidate Jerry Labriola, is reportedly running again in 2012 and Winsley has, so far, been the only candidate who has thrown his hat in the ring.

Winsley, 48, spoke often about his own record, mixed in with his stances on certain issues, such as taxes, the economy and small businesses.

“Small business is the heart of this economy. That’s what gets it done,” he said. And instead of making sure that heart is healthy so they can pump out jobs and profits for all Americans, we are clogging it up with taxes and regulations.”

‘My Goal is Not to Burn the Safety Net’

Born and Cleveland, Ohio, and raised by his great-grandmother, Winsley’s biography states that his early childhood was spent in the Garden Valley Housing Projects. He said he spent the earlier part of his life in “some of the poorest neighborhoods in the city” and was placed in an orphanage at age 13.

For that reason, Winsley said he offers a different perspective on the social services for those in need.

“My goal is not to burn the safety net, but to create ways so fewer people have to live in it,” he told Patch.

He also addressed this with the Naugatuck Republicans. Speaking about his opinions on taxes and regulations, Winsley noted that there are many people who are taking on food stamps, so much to the point where Yum Foods — the owners of Taco Bell and Pizza Hutt — are lobbying the federal government to be able to accept food stamps at their restaurants.

“They want to take advantage of some of the $64 billion that we paid out in food stamps last year,” he said. “We have so many people in the safety net, that pretty soon there will be nobody else left to hold it up. We need to turn it around before it’s too late.”

The American Dream in this Generation

What propelled him into the race, he told the Naugatuck Republicans, came about during his tours on speaking with high school and college-age students.

“My message to those students is this: In American you achieve anything you want through a combination of education, determination and hard work,” Winsley said.

But, he said, for the first time in the nation’s history the American Dream is in danger of “not coming true for a generation.”

“Our current children are now at a position of not being able to do as well as their parents,” Winsley said. “And if I go into schools, and tell our children about the promise of American knowing full well that the current government is not creating an environment where businesses can grow and entrepreneurs can prosper from their ideas… then I am lying to my children, to your children to every child that I speak to.”

He added, “And that, I won’t do.”

The Career Politican Effect

Winsley is a former broadcast news anchor and worked as a communications director for Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign, and later for the Republicans’ nominee for governor, Tom Foley. Winsley noted that he will often use the term “career politician” in a pejorative way, however that’s not implied with everyone who is in office.

“I have no problem with public servants who have chosen politics as a career, we have examples of that with our state representatives, and most notably, Christopher Shays,” Winsley said. Shays was seated in the room, as were Reps. Rosa Rebimbas and David Labriola, both of Naugatuck.

He said, “I do have a problem with career politicians who have forgotten they have a job to do and to represent the people that elect them.”

‘Not the Only Black Person in Connecticut That Thinks Taxes are Too High’

Winsley called the race to defeat DeLauro a “team effort.” He asked for borough Republicans to encourage fellow Republican town committees to endorse his candidacy, contribute to his campaign and volunteer their time.

Winsley proclaimed he could energize and unite the Republican base in the 3rd Congressional District, as well as make DeLauro “do something that she hasn’t done in 20 years: and that’s fight for her base.”

And in one his final statements during the evening, Winsley said he knows he could carry that fight because, he said, “I know a secret.”

“I am not the only black person in Connecticut who believes that taxes are too high and government spending is out of control. And I am not the only black person in Connecticut who is tired of seeing jobs leave my state instead of come into our state,” Winsley said. “There are some independent voters and those who typically vote Democrat. And if we reach out and offer them a clear alternative and a strong message that we all win with Winsley they will joint us and that’s how we take back the people’s seat.”

Holder Needs to Go, President Should Show Him the Door

Originally Published in Human Events
Nov. 22nd 2011 by Wayne Winsley

Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr., should resign immediately and if Holder does not do so on his own, President Barack H. Obama Jr., should demand Holder’s resignation.

Here is why. Someone at either ATF or DOJ during a meeting one day came up with and proposed what they thought was a brilliant idea.

“What if we let straw purchasers buy guns from U.S. gun shops and take them acrossthe border into Mexico? They will take the guns to the drug cartel leaders in their secret hideouts and we can swoop in and grab them. It’ll be great!”

Someone else at ATF or DOJ heard that idea and said, “That’s brilliant! Let’s do it!”

The above is an oversimplification of course but it captures the essence of what really happened.

The ATF did in fact allow over 2,000 firearms to be purchased and taken into Mexico, thinking that they could follow the guns straight to the drug kingpins like so many full-metal-jacketed breadcrumbs.

The scenario would be as laughable as a plot line from the original Batman TV series if not for the tragic consequences of the operation that AG Holder now refers to as “Flawed in concept as well as execution.”

At least one Border Patrol agent, Brian A. Terry has been killed by weapons linked to Fast and Furious and some 1,400 hundred weapons remain unaccounted for.

As Attorney General, Eric Holder is our nation’s top law enforcement officer and this catastrophic failure occurred on his watch. If this is what now passes for enforcement of the nation’s gun laws then our Second Amendment rights are in serious jeopardy.

I recently spoke to the Connecticut Citizens Defense League where I declared that if I am elected to Congress I will be a staunch supporter of the rights of law abiding, gun owning Americans and an advocate for the enforcement of existing gun laws. Well, as a candidate for U.S. Congress I can be no less vocal.

The bottom line is that Eric Holder should resign on his own and if not, the President should have the courage and good sense to dismiss him.

But of course President Obama will not because the current attorney general is the standard bearer for the current President’s anti-gun agenda.

Wayne Winsley is a candidate for U.S. Congress in Connecticuts 3rd District. He is a motivational speaker, veteran broadcaster and author of one of the most widely read conservation blogs in Connecticut.
