For years, the rap on the Westport Country Playhouse was that it was behind the times.
Plays were too safe. The staging was staid. Even the decor was dated.
An expensive renovation project, new artistic directors and other fresh blood have brought changes — programmatic as well as physical — to the legendary theater. It’s a year-round operation now, with plenty of buzz.
And now it has its own app.
The mobile site — www.westportplayhouse.org — also offers push notifications for ticket on-sale dates and other breaking news. The project was funded by Ann Sheffer and Bill Scheffler.
Traffic to the Playhouse’s standard website grew by 19% last year. Visits from mobile devices was up 32%.
Dorothy Gish, Helen Hayes, Paul Robeson — and the thousands of other actors who have appeared through the years — would be proud.
