We’re #2!

It’s over.

After 26 years as the area with the highest per capita income in the nation, Fairfield County has been toppled.

The richest place now — according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, reported by the Connecticut Post, is…Midland, Texas.

Thanks to new technologies in oil and natural gas, the Midland metropolitan area has a per capita income of $83,049. Fairfield County — which includes not only Westport, Darien and Greenwich, but Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury — clocked it at a mere $81,068.

Midland is about as far from Fairfield County — in many ways, if not in pure miles — as you can get.

The West Texas metro area was the setting for the Friday Night Lights book. It’s all about oil rigs and making money off natural resources.

Fairfield County was the setting for The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. It’s all about hedge funds, and making money off money.

There is one connection, though. George H.W. Bush went to Greenwich Country Day School.

But as a young man, he moved to Midland.

Midland, Texas is #1.
