Timing Is Everything

The 11th annual Team Mossman Polar Plunge is again set for Compo Beach, at 10 a.m. New Year’s Day. It’s a bone-chilling, no-thermal-suits-allowed, hangover-ending leap into Long Island Sound, the only redeeming feature of which is that it raises funds for Save the Children.

There’s no telling what the weather will be like that morning. And the NFL is already preparing contingency plans for bad weather on Super Bowl Sunday, which for reasons known only to the obviously concussed organizers takes place on the night of February 2 — in New Jersey.

However, one thing is fairly certain: The temperature this Sunday will reach into the 60s.

If you want to go swimming this winter, that’s the day.

This is what the Penguin Plunge looks like -- on a good day.
