Dan, although of a totally different Staples HS era, I too work on this account at TracyLocke and can vouch for Emma's great work!

Sundance is still special and Robert Redford is working hard to keep the focus on film and not celebrities. Our event was very 'un-corporate' and featured and art gallery of past festival films which was a big hit with festival goers.

Other Staples alumni seen and heard from at Sundance include Doug Tirola who stopped by our event and, of course, Sarah Koskoff, for her film, which sadly, I did not see while I was at Sundance.

Janice is my aunt and has been a role model for all of our family. She has taught us to work hard, to do our very best, and to treat others with dignity and respect. She always has time for her family and enjoys most when we are all together. She has balanced work, family and service to the community with grace and ease. Happy Birthday, Aunt Jenny and congratulations on the recogniton; it's well deserved! We love you.

Janice Macauda is my grandmother. She is a very loving and hard working woman. As long as I can remember she has never let anything get in her way. She has made me a better person and more appreciative of the job I go to everyday. Many thanks to my nana!

That's indeed somthing I relish about Westport, and New England in general: the stone walls. Very unique. They hint at thousands of stories, and say everything about the history of the area. I always think about who stacked each stone, and what those times were like. Out here in the rest of the country, there is nothing like them. Don't take them for granted!

I have been volunteering at Inclusion Teaming for about 4 months now and will be here for at least the rest of the school year. This is such a unique and exciting program that will help not only the children with skill differences but also those with typical skills. It has been wonderful to work for Ms. Catherine Hogan who is truly a pioneer in this field.

This is just the type of program that would have benefited me and many of the kids I grew up with. The only draw back to this program is that it wasn't around when I was in school. Finding ways to open the lines of communication between students that might otherwise have been isolated is innovative and imperative! Catherine Hogan is a trail-blazer and an example of the kind of educators our schools desperately need. Inclusion Teaming is a ground-breaking program.

A major component of the Inclusion Teaming Program is having students work with other students using their trained/developed skills in communication. Peer interaction is a primary component in learning communication, from childhood to adulthood and is an ongoing process. Significant positive communication skills are learned and practiced by the participants in the Inclusion Teaming Program, which have long term effects for their education, social interaction and future work situations.

It has been acknowledged by many professionals that the majority of communication is non-verbal between and among people. Recognizing this subtle and not so subtle means of communication, gaining understanding of how we communicate non-verbally, learning how to respond to this type of communication and gaining knowledge of own own non-verbal communication can and usually does improve the effectiveness of our own communication. The Inclusion Teaming Program assists in this total process of communication.

Bully is a form of communication, while irresponsible, it does convey information to another person. How the victim(s) of bullying and the bystanders communicate to the person who bullies is a skill that requires learning and practice. Learning how to use verbal communication as opposed to physical or emotional violence requires understanding, patience, verbal skills and positive rewards from a person's environment. Verbal communication is essential in problem solving, whether with difficulties between people or resolving the complexities of a task with a group of others.

The Inclusion Teaming Program helps to facilitate the acquisition of the skills and processes needed for effective communication.

Inclusion teaming is all about building bridges between typical students and those students with skill difference in a safe environment. It is the year 2010 and students with skill difference are an integral part of the fabric of classrooms all over the United States. However, just because these students are attending classes with typical students does not mean that either side has a great deal of interaction with one another.

Inclusion teaming is the key that unlocks the door. Typical peers can learn from peers with skill difference and vice versa. Opening up the lines of communication is the only way that progress is ever really made.

Our daughter (Diagnosed with Autism) and many of her friends just performed in the Nutcracker this past weekend with the New England Ballet. She practiced and trained with the ballet dancers for many months, dress rehearsals, the whole nine yards. I can't really say who benefited more from this diverse performance, the members of the New England Ballet, my daughter and her peers, of the audience. Everyone was moved to a standing ovation. Opportunities like this and those embraced by Inclusion Teaming will continue to bring the typical and special needs communities togethor and bridge the gap of understanding.

A major component of the Inclusion Teaming Program is having students work with other students using trained/developed skills in communication. Peer interaction is a primary component in learning communication, whether one is a child, adolescent, teen, young adult or adult, and is an ongoing process. Significant positive communication skills are learned and practiced by the participants in the Inclusion Teaming Program, which have long term effects in their education, social interaction and future work situations.

It has been acknowledged by many professionals that the majority of communication is non-verbal between and among people. Recognizing this subtle and not so subtle means of communication, gaining understanding of how we communicate non-verbally, learning how to respond to this type of communication and gaining knowledge of our own non-verbal communication can and usually does improve the effectiveness of our own verbal communication. The Inclusion Teaming Program assists in this total process of communication.

Bullying is a form of communication, while irresponsible, does convey information to another person. How the victim(s) of bullying and the bystanders communicate to the person who bullies or to adult advocates is a skill that requires learning and practice.
:earning how to use verbal communication as opposed to physical or emotional violence
requires understanding, patience, verbal skills and positive rewards from a person's environment. Verbal communication is essential in problem solving, whether with difficulties between/among people or resolving the complexities of a task with a group of others.

The Inclusion Teaming Program helps to facilitate the acquisition of the skills and processes needed for effective communication.

Problems with social relatedness is one of the main clinical markers defining those throughout the autism spectrum. Social relatedness encompasses simple awkwardness, inappropriate comments, to complete inability to use language for effective communications.

It is wonderful there is a local agency helping to facilitate social skill development. Perhaps even more important it that this program helps the neural-typical student interact with to thereby understand and accept others with such deficits and difficulties.

The Inclusion Teaming program uses a remarkable concept that truly provides a win-win situation for all.

Helping children without special needs and those with special needs understand each other and get along as one. What a strangely novel concept.

This really needs to take place in public school as a primary focus of this program. The current practices of public school segregation needs to end.

The Inclusion teaming program encourages students to increase self awareness and other awareness. Though a facilitated exchange of actionable information, each student’s unique sensory perceptual system and the emotional feelings that accompany it are shared and explored in a safe group environment.
As surely as intolerance and bullying are learned, intelligent empathy can be learned and can prove an effective gateway for better communication and increased tolerance for the differences amongst the students.
Though a better understanding others, they may better understand themselves. With this understanding comes an increased awareness of personal communication options that they may consciously implement to be more effective social individuals in our very social world.
I hope this program is made more widely available to the students in our community.

Kids are included where in other environments they're not. We are not a mentoring program. Instead, people are treated as equals here, and it makes for a very positive atmosphere. The kids are in a comfortable environment where they interact, learn, and have fun doing it. I'm on the Autism Spectrum and am a college graduate.

Inclusion Teaming is an innovative program that meets the needs of children with skill difference and children with skill advantage. This program is not offered anywhere else and should be promoted to families with children with special needs. It is not a social skills class! It is a unique program that helps students learn more about their unique issue and how to self advocate in the classroom and in life! This program helps the student transition from school to the workplace and have an easier time doing so. It is top notch and the community is lucky to have access to such a helpful program.

It is a long overdue program that recognizes the overwhelming importance of transition. Transition is difficult enough for mainstream youth--it can be a debilitating task for those with diverse needs and diverse methods of communicating.

Kudos to Inclusion Teaming!

This is a cutting edge innovative program that will impact all the participant's lives forever. In order to prevent bullying in our school systems we need to educate the students how to communicate their differences effectively. Kudos to Catherine Hogan for developing and implementing such an important program.

Thank you for the blog on Inclusion Teaming. Inclusion Teaming is an innovative, private, nonprofit program. The concept belongs to Catherine Hogan. This program will bring neurotypicals and those on the autism spectrum together to learn from one another. They will learn and practice communication in a safe, structured environment. Anyone could benefit from this program as we strive to live and work together in peace and harmony. It will reduce bullying through eduation also. Inclusion Teaming accepts donations.

There are two things that stand out about Inclusion Teaming from my perspective.
One of the things that impresses me about this program is how typical kids can learn how to communicate and work with kids who think and communicate atypically. This will enable them to be better managers in their future work careers.
The other thing that this program addresses is a skill that schools do not address for the ability challenged kids. Specifically, teaching them the critical life skill of how to stand up for themselves and advocate for their own interests when the need arises.
The Bottom Line is that Inclusion Teaming is a WIN-WIN proposition!

Inclusion Teaming’s program is so timely; it can provide a real lifeline to students anxiously facing the transition from high school to life as adults in the world at large. Better yet, even younger students on the spectrum - as early as 4th grade - can enroll and have more time to absorb the lessons offered by this well-planned course. The program has enormous value - not only for students with communication skill differences, whose particular talents may be more easily recognized as a result of it - but also for the understanding gained by the neurotypical peers and potential employers they will eventually encounter in the workplace.

Inclusion Teaming will help neurotypicals learn that individuals on the autism spectrum are more similar to them than they think and that their "wiring differences" can often be helpful in many problem-solving areas of employment. Individuals on the spectrum will get the opportunity to teach others about the ways they learn, improving their own, often tenuous self-esteem by feeling they are teaching others something of value. The more that individuals of differing abilities "team", the greater the amount of diversity and acceptance this world will come to know. Hopefully, this will lead to greater opportunities for people on the spectrum in the work world, now an area that is sorely lacking in Connecticut. More appropriate jobs for individuals on the spectrum would mean less reliance on State and Federal funding for the support of these individuals who desire to work but are not given the opportunity.

This program will be instrumental in helping students and their families understand that the autism spectrum is a continuum that is far-reaching. It isn't whether they have a cold or not have a cold, there are different levels of autism. By having these students help their peers, they will be helping everyone understand this disorder. Catherine Hogan has been working tirelessly for this cause and will continue to help discover new ways to reach out. Everyone will benefit from this program.

Bullet One: The reason for not knowing the difference between
teasing and bullying is because the definition of "bullying" is not
clear. Bullying includes, without stating it, teasing, fighting,
and abuse. Student abuse often meets the level of harm for abuse
outlined in state child abuse statutes. Distinctions between
teasing, fighting, and abuse would help students, parents,
educators, and consumers alike.

Bullet Two: This is absolutely true and students should be
applauded for it. They are the majority, and they should have
opportunities to learn about students who are being targeted.
This is now happening in Westport.

Last Bullet: I am not sure why the criteria for harm to a child is
limited to his or her academic performance? It is a well
established fact promoted by mental health institutions and
mental health professionals that bright children can continue to do okay
academically but become withdrawn or isolated socially. This
is a very serious risk factor to stored emotion affecting self
or others.
