MONTREAL – Trailing by 16 points late in the third quarter, the Sacred Heart men’s basketball team rallied for an 83-77 win over the McGill University Redmen in Montreal. Freshman De’Von Barnett led all scorers with 23 points.
Louis Montes had 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Steve Glowiak scored 11 points with three 3-pointers. Chris Evans scored 10 points and made a three with 1:41 remaining in the game to give the Pioneers’ the lead for good. Center Cole Walton added six rebounds.
SHU opened the game on a 10-3 run powered by 3s from Montes, Glowiak, and Phil Gaetano. McGill responded with a 13-5 run over a span of 4:45 to take a 16-15 lead with 2:31 left in the opening quarter. The Redmen led 19-17 with less than two minutes remaining in the first when a Leo Vincent 3-pointer sparked a 7-0 Sacred Heart scoring spurt that gave the Pioneers’ a 24-19 lead, which was cut to 24-21 by the end of the period.
The Pioneers’ offense went cold in the second quarter, scoring just nine points. McGill scored 20 points in the second, ending the half on a 12-0 run to take a 41-33 lead. The Redmen continued to pull away in the third quarter, leading by 16, 60-44, with 2:57 remaining in the quarter. Sacred Heart’s comeback started with 1:23 to play in the third when Montes made a pair of free throws. An Evans three and five straight Glowiak points cut the deficit to six, 60-54, by the end of the quarter.
McGill led by seven, 68-61, with 7:22 remaining in the game before a Tevin Falzon layup started an 8-0 Sacred Heart run that gave the Pioneers’ a 69-68 advantage with 5:10 to play. A Glowiak three capped off the run. The two teams traded the lead until the 1:41 mark, when Evans’ three gave Sacred Heart a 77-76 lead, an advantage the Pioneers would not relinquish.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Thursday night when it travels to Quebec City to play the University of Laval.
