It was precisely that type of requirement that has destroyed California. The state is in desperate need of both tax reform and increased taxes on the wealthiest residents. Both are backed by the Democratic majority in the legislature and by Republican governor Arnold Schwartzenegger. But the small minority of far-right Republicans in the legislature have refused to let any tax legislation pass. The result is deadlock, increasing debts, massive lay-offs of teachers, police and firemen, and cutbacks at the University of California, the best public university system in the world.

The very last thing this state needs is to give a veto to the rabid right, the way California did. In this state our elected representatives are making the tough choices every day. What we don’t need is a tiny minority holding us hostage.

Republican Representative Miller might want the change, because he and his fellow Republicans feel they hold a royal right to rule, no matter how few Nutmeggers vote for them. But this is the Constitution State, and we don’t let a cabal control us.
