Broken Wings: Friday roundup

Kalamazoo led 2-0 early tonight but gave it back: Brandon DeFazio scored the tying and winning goals as Wheeling won Game 1 of the ECHL Eastern Conference Final 3-2 in overtime. Game 2 is Saturday before the series goes to Wheeling for three.

Milwaukee got a lead on Houston with a 3-1 win. The two Eastern Conference series play tomorrow night, an hour apart. (Road trip?)

The Worlds began with an upset: Germany got 31 saves from Augsburger Panther goalie Dennis Endras in a 2-0 win over Russia. Onetime Sound Tigers goalie Tobias Stephan made 29 saves for a Swiss shutout in an overtime win over France; former Binghamton defenseman Julien Vauclair got the winner. Host Slovakia fell behind Slovenia but came back. Canada was tied with Belarus, but John Tavares assisted on the winner and scored some insurance. James Reimer got the win.

The U.S. gets going Saturday morning at 10:15 (Versus) against Austria. Finland plays Denmark at the same time. The IIHF stats page has the full schedule; Eastern Daylight is six hours behind these times.

And RIP, Madelyn Pugh.
