Exactly. He signed an NHL contract that began with the season that just ended. Compare with, say, Jack Hillen when he came out of school in ’08, going straight to the Islanders. Contrast with, say, Trevor Smith when he signed in ’07, going AHL ATO for the end of the ’06-07 season, then the NHL deal beginning the next year.
And to head off what may be somebody’s follow-up: The “slide” rule only covers junior-age players, like Kyle Okposo when he left school at 19 to come here at midseason ’07-08. Because he only played nine NHL games, he still had three years to go after that season.

I believe Anders Lee signed a two year deal toward the end of the season. Did a year of that get burned by the couple games he played?
