Game 4s/Wellwood retires: Thursday notes

The Pens are on the brink: A goal midway through the third gave St. John’s a 2-1 win in Game 4. The IceCaps can put the series away Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre. No such scenario in Toronto, where the Marlies evened the Western Conference Final with a 4-1 win. Again, Trevor Smith with an assist in the early going, helping set up the first goal of Spencer Abbott’s natural hat trick. That series now can’t end before Monday.

Caught on EliteProspects: Appears we saw the last of Eric Wellwood’s playing career. Oshawa hired him as an assistant coach. Wellwood was cut by his own skate in the back of the leg in a game late in 2012-13, right in front of the Webster Bank Arena penalty boxes. It was confusing at first, scary later. A shame it ends that way.

And with David Desharnais’ elimination, doesn’t look as if a former Sound Tiger will win the Stanley Cup this year. Could still be a local, though. And at least two will have a chance at the Calder Cup.
