Had to get away: Whatever day this is now notes

Staycation* this past week, mostly spent cleaning up both the physical plant at home and the paperwork of trading one car headache for another. It is a weird feeling taking the plates** off the car you drove for 10 years, mumbling “dang, Lehtonen, we had some times, didn’t we…”

Anyway. Notes while I try to decide which Finnish goalie’s name to yell when I’m in a spot with New Car-y, and while we get tennis cranking in New Haven

Fairfield’s Kiira Dosdall has re-signed with the Isobel Cup champion Metropolitan Riveters. The Rangers signed Dustin Tokarski, giving them yet another option for a 2/3/4 goalie.

Things are busy up in Worcester, where they’ve picked up Class AAA baseball and the CWHL in the past week.

Tip of cap to Ben Birnell, a most worthy Ellery Award winner.

Mike Vaccaro’s look at New York’s iconic uniforms includes a ding at the New Jersey Devils’ change of colors, which reminds me. In 1992, my cousin Wally took me and assorted other family members to the Meadowlands for a Devils-Rangers game. I remember it being a pretty good one, and I also remember walking out next to another family with two girls, one probably my younger brother’s age, one a little younger still, and I remember the younger one carrying a sign that said “Don’t Be Mean, Keep The Green.” My kinda girl.

And RIP, Aretha Franklin, Doc Edwards and Kofi Annan.

**-Did you know you can cancel your Connecticut plates online? No DMV trip? Keep ’em and hang them on your wall? (That last part may just be me.) Found that by accident. (I didn’t know there were refunds, either, though they appear to make you jump through a hoop to get them.)
