Road game: Bridgeport at Binghamton

  • Who, when, whatever: Sound Tigers at Devils, Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena, Binghamton, N.Y., 7 p.m.
  • (Did you say Devils not Senators OK good) Watch: AHLTV pay-per-view
  • Listen: Mixlr audio
  • Twitters: Alan / the Sound Tigers / the Devils / Rob Lippolis
  • Box score: Maybe (R: Deckard, Gour; L: Loftus, Waleski)
  • Game notes: Welp. Every 11 years, like clockwork, a guy tears his Achilles in pregame two-touch (as Arthur Staple believes, and as makes sense from all available information) and messes things up for Bridgeport. So up goes Sebastian Aho, who’s an AHL All-Star for the third year in a row but ironically suddenly looks more likely to miss it for the second time. (Yes, there’s a stupid stat about that too.) Bridgeport loses its top power-play defenseman and is suddenly, at least as long as Thomas Hickey is out (we’d been told upper this time around; Lou Lamoriello told reporters lower), righty-heavy, with four of six on this roster shooting right, and the top two call-ups in Worcester, Mike Cornell and Ryan MacKinnon, also righties. (When Ryan Pulock moved over to the left side to start last night’s game, I dug a little into the archives; could swear I talked to him and some others about playing the left when Bridgeport was dressing up to five righties at a time a couple of years ago. No such luck.)
  • Why don’t you break this section up Good idea. Meanwhile, he didn’t score Tuesday in Hartford, but Kieffer Bellows was still named AHL Player of the Month. (Someone should write about him. Oh, wait, everyone has been writing about him. (Here’s the weekly rail, too.)) The awards debuted in 2007-08, and though Bridgeport had a few rookies of the month and goalies of the month, the Sound Tigers’ only other Player of the Month was Casey Cizikas in January 2012. Meanwhile, on the other wing, Oliver Wahlstrom will be back soon, as the United States got knocked out of the World Juniors on Thursday morning with a disappointing 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Finland. Bridgeport also sent Cornell back to Worcester — we’ll see how long that lasts, or if they go another way — and it sent Ben Thomson to the Railers, too. Thomson hadn’t played since Nov. 23 and only once since Nov. 2, only five times all year.
  • Meh, what else is going on: We released the 88th New Haven Register All-State football teams last night. That was quite the few weeks. A long fooball season has come to an end. Now that that’s over, more time for hockey… high school hockey.
  • RIP, David Stern, Don Larsen, Sam Wyche and Jack Sheldon.
  • If this were a regular blog post, what word or phrase would most likely follow “More” at this point: Tomorrow, hopefully shorter.
