Want to know what the coffee’s like at the Bay Area’s best tech campus cafe? You can find out without getting a job in the valley.
The Philz Coffee at Facebook is No. 1, according to a recent report of most-satisfying Bay Area tech campus cafes from Foursquare. Philz has served caffeinated beverages at the social media company since February 2012, just months after the Menlo Park campus opened in 2011. (Philz has locations throughout San Francisco, the East Bay, North Bay, South Bay and Peninsula.) When lines got long, Facebook built a miniature yellow brick road so that employees didn’t have to stand on a lawn. Nearby, a pair of witch’s legs jut out from beneath a miniature cottage.
Foursquare users praised the caffeine levels and variety available at Facebook’s Philz Coffee. Mike Arpaia suggested using the OrderAhead app to request a coffee while you’re on the Facebook Shuttle.
“Talk to the people making your coffee,” wrote Jonathon Colman, a content strategist at Facebook. “They’re smart and funny! And they’ll customize your coffee however you like.”
Foursquare’s data scientists ranked corporate cafes by creating a “sentiment score” based on how many likes each eatery received, plus whether its reviews were positive or negative. The company stressed that these are not necessarily the top cafeterias; they’re the ones with the happiest customers. The 10 most satisfying cafes are above. In addition to Facebook, you’ll see several locations at Google and Apple. Most of the food is free for employees.
