Job searching during the summer often resembles the holidays, where the mood and pace of work changes. Depending on the industry, the summer can slow things down a bit and that frequently leads to a relaxed job search.

Much like the holidays, the summer is a special time of year filled with vacations, family outings and events for celebration. While it can be tempting to put your job search on hold make sure you do it for the right reasons instead of buying into myths that hiring will be limited over the next few months.

The summer is actually the perfect time to keep your search moving forward because it provides a unique window of opportunity to network with people and the possibility that interviewing can be faster. The hiring process during the summer is often effected by vacations and that could indicate either a lengthy interview progression or a quick one depending on how many people are involved in the process.

There are numerous reasons to keep your job search moving forward during the summer, one is to stand out from the crowd.  The “herd mentality” views the summer as a slow time of year where hiring decisions are delayed until fall and everyone is out of the office. The attitude that no one is hiring usually keeps the crowd thinner and increases your chances of being noticed.

Truth is, there are plenty of decision-makers working during the summer and hiring takes place all the time if you are the right candidate for the employer’s needs. Your efforts need to be on becoming the best candidate possible by researching companies, developing a game plan and reaching out to those who could expand your knowledge in the marketplace.

Don’t discount the power of journaling – capturing your thoughts will help reduce stress as well as become more creative.  Most likely you’ll experience the highs and lows of a job search, especially during the summer when you are waiting patiently for those to return back to work. Writing your thoughts down helps you focus and confirms your progress.

You may have more time to attend training classes that will add value to your background. Moving forward keeps you active and alert to opportunities that others may miss while putting their job search on hold.
