If Mitt Romney were Ronald Reagan, he’d say this at Wed debate (VIDEO)

Word is that Team Romney “has equipped (Mitt) with a series of zingers that he has memorized and has been practicing on aides since August.”

“Equipped” him? Like he’s climbing Mt. Everest? And nothing like telegraphing that you’re packing Zingers and you’re not afraid to use them.

Yes, Romney is trailing in most polls — but he isn’t far enough behind that he needs to start swinging wildly. But he does need to change the momentum of the race.

Hmmmmm…….

In times like this, Republicans ask: WWRD? What would Reagan do?

Here is Ronald Reagan’s best debate moment, in a 1980 contest against incumbent President Jimmy Carter. Reagan trailed until late in that race and the debates helped him. He asked a question that is equally valid today: Are you better off than you were four years ago:

Now, there are many differences between then and now, starting with double-digit inflation under Carter. Plus, voters blamed Carter for their economic woes; they’re giving Obama a little more slack. A little.

More important, the Obama campaign has already cut a TV commercial answering the “Are you better?” question. The challenge will be for the often-windy Obama to distill this response into a TV debate sound byte. Or maybe Obama can call for a sub and let Bill Clinton answer it….kind of what he does in his TV commercial:

Meanwhile, while everybody in both camps is engaging in full-fledged Debate Sandbagging, apparently Romney surrogate Chris Christie didn’t get the memo. On ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” Sunday, the NJ guv talked up Mitt’s debate game:

“I have absolute confidence that when we get to Thursday morning, George, all of you are going to be shaking your head saying it’s a brand-new race with 33 days to go,” Christie said.
