John Daniels, (photo from C-SPAN) a high school football star while at Hillhouse High, graduated from Villanova and served in the state Senate before becoming New Haven’s first African-American mayor in 1989. He was about 79.
This from Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov Wyman:

“During a career spanning decades, John Daniels had an unrivaled dedication to and passion for the people of his city. From the Board of Alderman, to the State Senate, to the Mayor’s office, he was a trailblazer. He broke barriers, and truly personified progress. Respected by leaders across Connecticut, he encapsulated what it means to serve the public. Whether in Hartford or New Haven, John Daniels devoted himself to improving the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed, and our thoughts go out to his family.”

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn, also offered his thoughts and praise for the former mayor.

“As a model public servant, John Daniels broke new ground and paved new paths for generations after him. He forged coalitions and consensus among diverse combinations of race and religion, offering a deep sense of humanity and great humor. He touched countless lives in his drive to expand opportunity and he gave of himself unceasingly in service and friendship,” Blumenthal said.
