Representatives from ITNCoastalCT will give a presentation about its driving services for seniors and volunteer opportunities at the Westport Weston Family YMCA on Friday, Nov. 20 at 11:45 am, as part of the Y’s weekly Senior Friday activities and seminars for active older adults.
ITNCoastalCT offers an arm-through-arm and door-to-door dignified transportation alternative for local seniors or visually impaired adults, providing cars and trained drivers who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The ITNCoastalCT service area includes both Westport and Weston as well as the neighboring towns of Easton, Fairfield, Norwalk and Wilton.
Older adults who join ITNCoastalCT for an annual fee of $75 per individual or $100 per family pay $1.50 per mile plus a $3.50 pickup fee per ride between the hours of 6 am and 9 pm. No money is exchanged in the vehicle and tips are not accepted.
“Since you don’t pay cash or give a tip and we only use private cars, riding with ITN is more like riding with a friend than taking a taxi,”says Celeste Stranaghan, Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator for ITNCoastalCT. She adds that the average fare is typically about half the cost of a comparable taxi ride.
Part of a national nonprofit network, ITNCoastalCT relies on volunteer drivers, who can accrue mileage for themselves or donate the mileage to a family member, friend or to a Road Scholarship fund for reduced-rate rides for those in financial need. ITNCoastalCT arranges driving assignments and routes around a volunteer’s schedule and choice of driving areas.
YMCA members who become volunteer drivers with ITN will have the option of donating a free ITN membership and/or their accrued miles into a “Y Mileage Bank” for other YMCA members who are in need.
