How the YMCA Strengthens Community, One Family at a Time

Annual Campaign imagePeople know the impact the Westport Weston Family YMCA has had throughout the towns we have served for nearly a century. But there’s so much more to our Y than you might think.

Each day we hear the stories of those we help through the Y’s ongoing charitable efforts. Like this Westport mother, who recently sent us a note expressing her gratitude for the YMCA membership we were able to provide at no cost over the past year to her family, which is struggling both financially and personally:

“… YMCA membership ended up having a profound impact on my family. Our daughter has been diagnosed with autism and struggles with language and peer interactions. The Y’s Kids’ Club proved to be a huge resource for socialization for our daughter, who is unable to participate in traditional classes and library groups. She furthers her interactions through her love of the water and she swims at the Y regularly. She adores the Y’s Splash Pad area in the warm-water shallow pool and has even made a few little friends there. She has constant opportunities for peer interactions and to try to use her words.

“Further, I was able to swim there myself and have been able to attend even more regularly now that my daughter has begun school. As you recall, I have a severe knee injury that makes impact aerobics impossible – swimming laps in the pool this year has strengthened my health and well-being as well as my self-esteem. It has also resulted in a 20-lb. weight loss despite a new hypothyroidism diagnosis. The weight loss is also staving off a diabetes diagnosis, while the increased strength in the muscles surrounding my knee may eliminate the need for knee replacement in the near future. This is huge.

“Finally, my husband utilized the Y to work out and run, which is a huge stress reliever for him. He was so motivated that he joined the Westport Runners Club and ran a 15Km race this summer. He just completed his first half marathon this fall when he ran the Reservoir Run.”

This local family and many others in our community rely on financial assistance to come to our Y, where they can find opportunities for growth, wellness, friendship and a sense that they belong.

Our Y is a cause – a cause worth investing in. Through the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, we make sure our doors stay open to all. Your support helps hundreds of local youth, seniors and families live healthier, happier, more connected lives each and every day.
