We’re saddened to learn from Nora Vogel that her husband, Gil, passed away on November 27 at the age of 92. Nora was by his side.
Gil Vogel was a Lifetime YMCA Member and a Fitness Instructor at the Westport Weston Family YMCA from 1957-1991.
In 1992, YMCA staff and volunteer leaders dedicated the lower gymnasium of the downtown facility to Gil “in honor of the 35 years of fitness leadership he provided to countless adults through the exercise classes he conducted.”
In 2011, Nora and Gil spoke of their lifetime commitment to the Y as part of the Family YMCA’s “Y We Matter” project:“We have been members of the Y since coming from Holland in 1957. We’ve done every sport and exercise together and we have the same interests. That is how we’ve been together for so long.
We played badminton and volleyball, and even taught ballroom dancing here for a few years. That’s darn good exercise! Then Gil became a lifeguard because they were short of help. On Saturdays, he ran the gym. Gil is so honored to have his name on a plaque next to it.
All the people we know, especially the foreigners, we introduce to the Y. ‘Go to the Y,’ we say, because that’s where you meet people. Besides, putting on weight is very easy to do when you come to America.”
According to Nora, Gil had made arrangements to give of himself until the end by donating his body to the Yale University Medical School. To read more about Gil, please see this obituary, published on westportnow.com.
A memorial is planned after Christmas at the Unitarian Church in Westport. A specific date and time has not yet been set; please check the church’s website at http://uuwestport.org/.
