She’s baaaaack.

Lee Whitnum, the bombastic Greenwich Democrat and perennial public office hopeful, filed the requisite petitions to run for Senate earlier today, according to Av Harris, a spokesman for the secretary of the state’s office.

Petitioners must collect signatures from 7,500 registered voters to get onto the ballot.

Certification of the names, which will be conducted at the local level by the registrar of voters for each city and town where the electors reside, won’t be complete until later in the month.

Linda McMahon, the favorite to win Tuesday’s Republican Senate primary, is hoping to use the same avenue to secure a second spot on the ballot as an Independent.

Whitnum told my esteemed Hearst colleague Brian Lockhart back in June that she’d be running as an independent with a small “i.”

Should Whitnum make the cut, it could set up a potential three-ring circus between her, McMahon and the Democratic favorite Chris Murphy, who Whitnum referred to as a “whore” in a televised debate earlier this year.

CORRECTION: It’s actually the town clerks that certify the names on each petition. Thanks to Charles Lynch for pointing that out.
