Here’s a good one: auto-moderation forced me to approve my own comment. (Too many links.)
The name in the contest was “Beach Tigers.” (They went so far as to register the URL.) The focus group told them to get the Sound in there, and they liked the circus angle (tied rather strongly to one former mayor): hence, on Sept. 20, 2000, Sound Tigers.
Now the most important question: Which someone?
I saw someone said the way the name Tigers came out was due to P.T. Barnum. While that may be logical, it is not correct. I wish those people would not give a reason like that unless they know it is a fact. The team had a contest and Tigers was the most popular name.
