  1. Jon: I was holding out as I didn’t have a Gillies answer, and fortunately CapGeek came through for you this morning. Two-way (with a nice raise on the back end). Not sure on the other two questions.

    Kevin: Well, hi!

Chris: The short version is that all those UFAs become free on July 1. The distinctions are just the ways in which they get there. There’s nothing binding a player on an AHL contract (whether ATO, PTO or AHL standard player contract) to his team; he’s free at the end of the deal. Group III means he’s over 27 or has played seven years on an NHL contract. Group VI means he’s over 25 and has played three years on an NHL contract and hasn’t played more than 80 NHL games (or 28 for a goalie).

MF – thanks for all the efforts you put in to brings us great info. never knew anything about blogs and tweets until you showed me the way. I would like to see Mauldin back, but mainly like it was said above. We need scoring. We need a plan to have success and NOT just develop. Have a great summer and again thanks

So…not sure of the subtle (or maybe not so subtle) differences b/w the diff classifications of the UFAs. Can you explain a little if/when you get the chance Mike?
I think with what Mauldin did for the team this yr it would be a BAD move to not bring him back.
Smitty, I’m not convinced he should be back. If the team thought highly of him they had multiple chances to call him back up again but instead chose other players instead. I like him but not sure if he hit his ceiling already or not.

Great work this year Mike! Thanks!!

Mike = I was at the game last night, and security wouldn’t let me up there, but we were sitting next to Munroe – wanted to say hi to you, but…..

  5. Brass says:

Very unprofessional of the organization not to sit down with the UFA’s. Smith has scored over 70 goals over his last 3 years and finished the year playing with a separated shoulder and Mauldin led the team in scoring and this is the respect that they show.

  6. Miriam says:

It’d be sad to see Smitty go. I did notice that he kind of plateaued, if not fell off a little bit, this year, but this team has had a tough ride overall and a lot of people did not provide what we’re used to. I really hope he stays, but wish him the best if he doesn’t.

  7. Jon says:

Mike, Thank you for your coverage throughout the year. Couple questions, Did Gillies get a 1 way NHL deal and what do you think the chances are that the Islanders buyout Witt? Also do you think Davies get a chance or is he likely to go elsewhere?

  8. Erik says:

I would like to see Mauldin and Flood re-signed by the Islanders, as well as Lawson to give a little Vet presence to Mikko and Poulin. Jon Gleed has earned at least a 2 way NHL contract for a season. Morency should be a must to be re-signed, his community work is valuable to the franchise. There is always a spot open for the Captain to return (as long as he wants to keep playing.) Davies looked alright and is maybe good enough to be a AHL/ECHL depth guy, as are Jake Gannon and Victor Bartley. Depth wins (see hershey) New, but some familiar faces we’re almost guaranteed to see some point next yr: Travis Hamonic, Rhett Rakshani, Kevin Poulin and a yr of good health from Mikko Koskinen and maybe Jyri Niemi, Kirill Petrov and/or David Ullstrom. We need to pursue another goal scorer and playmaker like a Pascal Pelletier and Brett Sterling if he’s not re-signed.
