  1. May be (am probably) missing some subtleties, but for one thing, if you’re assigning them to the AHL, you’re not assigning them to junior, so they count toward the 50-contract limit. I’m not positive whether Strome counts at this instant or not, but they’re either at 49 or 50. In Mayfield’s case, it’s after the trade deadline, so I don’t think you could assign him to the AHL at this point. For older college guys, if you were to sign them to an NHL contract that begins this year, it counts as the first year one way or the other (no “slide” for non-junior-age guys). Plus you’re not paying them back-end-of-two-way money.

    So why do they use the ATO for guys like Pedan and Mayfield? Why not just sign and reassign?

  3. No, straight reassignment. He’s technically under contract for this year, though it doesn’t “count” because he’s 19 unless he plays six NHL games.
