Making the call

You could, perhaps, if you really wanted, maybe, argue against the boarding major, apparently the first non-fighting major of Jeremy Colliton’s career, the one that, with Benn Olson smacking Kris Newbury off the draw, led to the back-breaking third Hartford goal.

You really don’t have to, if you’re a Sound Tigers fan. Bridgeport’s bigger gripes were with two hits that didn’t get a twitch out of Marcus Vinnerborg’s callin’ arm.

The tape from the first period shows Rhett Rakhshani moving the puck ahead, and a second and a half later Brodie Dupont coming from his right and nailing him in the shoulder, and Rakhshani dropping to the ice, then going off with his right arm hanging limp.

The tape from the second period shows Joe Pereira going in on the forecheck, and Pavel Valentenko hitting him face-first into the end boards.

More than one guy in the Sound Tigers locker room, some privately and one for public consumption, made the point that the Pereira hit was worse than the Colliton hit.

Now, none of this changes the fact that the Sound Tigers didn’t come out great, got outshot 18-3 in the first (but only trailed 1-0), got their goal shortly after the Pereira hit because of two other penalties, back-to-back.

You’ll read Pat Bingham’s feelings in the paper.

….

The light failure coming out of the first intermission was reportedly from a frozen computer.

Without compromising his amateur eligibility, the Islanders signed Jamie Doornbosch to be tonight’s ATO. I don’t care if Calvin de Haan has an OHL playoff game. We have one more chance to get the man to the Island, people. Come on. We were the first to call out the Islanders’ emergency conditions on defense, a week ago. Throw us a bone. By the way, I love how the press releases say these guys have “agreed to terms” on an ATO. As far as I can tell, the terms are (1) player will show up at 5 p.m.; (2) he won’t take too much bubble gum or tape, ’cause he can’t receive a “bonus … of any kind.” I’m sure there’s a real answer, and I should go looking for it, but still.

Corey Locke was named AHL MVP today after leading Binghamton back to the playoffs. Onetime — or as we joke, two-time — Sound Tiger Wes Goldie was named ECHL MVP.

Kalamazoo took a lead on Florida.

Neat bit: Dane Byers tied an AHL record tonight with his 83rd game of the season. He should break it over the weekend.

And tip of cap to George Kolombatovitch, instrumental in an awful lot of my college memories.
