Holy cro: Pens win Game 7/Wednesday notes

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored five goals in a blink at the start of the second period tonight in Game 7, and it looked like a laugher. Holy cro, it was not, but the Pens held on and will face the IceCaps for the second time in three years. The Bruins got one back on a late-second short-handed goal, then scored three in the first 10 minutes of the third period. They got no closer. The Eastern Conference Final begins Saturday on the Rock.

The United States’ quarterfinal game Thursday morning will air on tape delay of about an hour on NBCSN; pregame about 9:30, game at 10. (Formula One race will be wrapping up in the hour before .)

And the University of Alaska Fairbanks announced that Justin Woods will miss next season, battling Ewing’s sarcoma. As Chris Peters points out, with Providence’s Drew Brown, that’s the second D-I NCAA hockey player in a week to reveal that diagnosis, and I’d just written a note in a bigger piece about Nate Greenberg, a Union and former Staples High lacrosse player, fighting the same thing. For a rare disease, that’s a few too many instances.
