Big guys on the brink: Wednesday notes

One of the best AHL seasons ever is on the verge of becoming a footnote. Hershey trailed in the second period, but beat Toronto 8-2 tonight at Ricoh to take a 3-0 lead in the series. Zach Sill and Ryan Bourque scored short-handed goals on the same Aaron Ness bucket-list penalty (I may have to go watch that one) to make it a 5-2 game, and Jakub Vrana (his sixth of the playoffs) and Christian Djoos added goals 59 seconds apart soon after. Vrana (um, his seventh) tacked on late. The series, and the Marlies’ remarkable season, could end Friday.

Ontario-Lake Erie Game 4 is Thursday.

In other news, Albany Devils forward Chris McKelvie has become an assistant coach at Army.

Language warning in more ways than one: Fascinating piece (hat tip: Ben Zimmer) on a man trying to erase “origin unknown” from the dictionary entries of some common and uncommon words, like he, she, hockey, pimp and… well, you’ll see.

And RIP, Beth Howland.
