We’ll miss ya, Gino

(Minimal hockey content. No Sound Tigers news. Liveblog in a bit.)

You know Gene Moretti. Heck, maybe you actually do; he’s been a fixture in our local media for a long time. But if you’ve read us at all, you know him in some way. He was in charge of our high schools coverage since before I got here, and when I got here is right around when a growing number of Sound Tigers were born.

He wrote for years before that. His editing has surely changed the way I express things, so you’ve read him in me. (Every single “arguably” comes from him, for one thing.)

And even if you still have no idea…

Right over the Connecticut Post ad on the boards, in the front row, throws his arms up a split second after the person behind him? That’s Gino. I’d been over saying hi to Joanne and him during warmups.

The four years I spent doing high schools part-to-full-time were under him; he’d pretty much pull me back each of the 15 summers and early falls that have followed, too. “Mentor” would start to cover it.

An unfortunate set of circumstances has led him to retire, and he hasn’t been able to get out and about as much as any of us would like, but the department got together this afternoon to wish him and Lou Pintek, another longtime coworker of ours who retired last year, good luck.

We probably need it more than they do. We’ve already been missing them. Good to see them both looking good.

Hopefully we’ll see him at at least one more Sound Tigers game soon.
