Feeling old: Saturday notes

(Not yet, though.) Grand Rapids has a 2-0 lead in the Final(s) after a 6-5 double-overtime win tonight at home over the Crunch. Jared Coreau had himself a reasonably successful 27:02 of extra time, 20-something saves, after a wild back-and-forth first 60, and then Ben Street finished things off. The series goes to Syracuse on Wednesday.

(OK, now.) Remember Konstantin Kalmikov? Showed up in the ’02 playoff run, stuck around the next year, played just enough to become an AHL veteran, never played in the AHL again? Kalmikov had a little boy back then, just a toddler, with a memorable name. I was sitting at a lacrosse game this afternoon when I saw that name again. Cape Breton selected Brooklyn Kalmikov with the 15th pick in the QMJHL draft this morning.

(Brooklyn Kalmikov wasn’t close to the best name in that draft.)

Caught three local selections in the late rounds of that draft: Darien’s Spencer Knight to Chicoutimi and Jack Ferguson to Drummondville (Avon and Hotchkiss, respectively), and New Canaan’s Briggs Gammill of Berkshire to Shawinigan.

RIP, Gordon Christian.

And for crying out loud: Thoughts to London.
