The deed is done: Travis Hamonic is a Calgary Flame. The Islanders got a first- and second-rounder next year from the Flames as well as another future second rounder. Two homegrown players gone in three days.
Perhaps most intriguing of the Islanders draft picks: their fourth rounder, Sebastian Aho, a defenseman who scored 30 points last year as a 21-year-old in Sweden’s top league. One wonders if they’d be looking to bring him over here*. The Isles went defense-heavy early, taking two lefty teenagers, Robin Salo and Ben Mirageas, with their early-round picks. They traded next year’s sixth to the Kings for a sixth this year, taking forward Arnaud Durandeau from Halifax of the QMJHL, then took NTDP forward Logan Cockerill in the seventh.
Greenwich’s Jack Badini, a Harvard commit who won the Clark Cup in the USHL this past year, went 91st to Anaheim. Phil Kemp went to Edmonton at 208.
*-Edit:
Kautonen said 5th-round D Sebastian Aho, who is already 21 and just finished his fourth pro year in Sweden, could play in BPT next season.
