Toews-Burroughs re-sign / Joel Martin retires

The Islanders announced two-year contracts for what had been the top defense pair for the Sound Tigers the past two years. Devon Toews gets a two-year, one-way contract. It’s a two-way deal for Kyle Burroughs.

To be seen if they still play together here. Toews probably would’ve gotten his NHL shot at New Year’s if not for the shoulder surgery that ended his season, and he could claim a spot up there in the fall. Burroughs was the rock of the defense corps all year.

Ryan Pulock is the only outstanding unrestricted free agent for the Islanders. (Brock Nelson’s arbitration election locks him up, even if he’s technically unsigned.)

…….

Former Sound Tigers goalie Joel Martin has retired to become Kalamazoo’s assistant coach. Martin was a heck of a good soldier that crazy 2010-11 season, including that night when he bolted down to Uniondale to sign an NHL contract. He went 0-2-1 in relief that year.

Plus we’ll always have opening night 2010, when he led them out and stopped our heart for a moment.

And this from a couple of days ago: Minor League baseball’s Lexington Legends will honor the Kentucky Thoroughblades with special jerseys on Aug. 10.
