‘It was dawn before he came up with the answer’: Wednesday notes

There are people who’ll be mad at me if I don’t note the former New Haven Nighthawk whose team is off to the Stanley Cup Final, though it’s the former Bridgeport Sound Tigers assistant coach who’s maybe a little more relevant to the blog. Anyway.

We could be two days away from a Calder Cup Final matchup after Toronto shut out the Phantoms in Allentown. Ben Smith put it away with two power-play goals on an Alex Lyon match penalty for kicking Mason Marchment.

Texas goes for the sweep in Rockford on Thursday. The Marlies go for the sweep in Allentown on Friday.

In the ECHL, Colorado came from two goals down in the third period and beat Fort Wayne in overtime in Game 7. The Eagles will play Florida for a Kelly Cup before they go to the AHL.

Pete Paguaga had a rained-out baseball game Tuesday but found a classic event anyway.

And RIP, Philip Roth.
