Yes, b’ys: Newfoundland wins the Kelly Cup

Congrats to Eamon McAdam, Scott Pellerin, ex-Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig and the Newfoundland Growlers, Kelly Cup champions in their first season in the ECHL. They finished it off in six tonight, taking a big lead and clinging on for dear life before setting off a party like George Street hasn’t seen since… well, probably last night. That town knows what it’s doing.

But seriously, congrats to St. John’s on its first pro championship; a great place with great people. Congrats as well to Brian Rogers, who was emotional on the air, and hope our buds Brendan McCarthy and Robin Short enjoyed telling the tale.

The Calder Cup Final is 1-1 going to Chicago for games Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Wolves won Game 1 in overtime (bah, do it in double overtime like yer father); Charlotte came back to take Game 2. Caught a bit of the second game, and man, that’s fun hockey.

Elsewhere, Peter Mannino has a head coaching gig in the ECHL.
